It is certainly worth the effort required to get to this beautiful B&B at the heart of the village of St Urcize, in the Aubrac district. The village is perched on top of a hill and is full of old houses built of limestone and schist stone, and has narrow lanes and fountains and a beautiful Romanesque church that is on the pilgrims’ way to Santiago di Compostella. This rather austere eighteenth-century building was a lawyer’s house, then the village school, and now its rendered walls hide a surprising B&B. Fred and Isabelle have let their inner collectors, interior designers and artists run wild. They have re-used old building materials, furniture and ornaments to create their own special world, which pays homage to the famous people after whom the five guest bedrooms are named: Georges Sand, the Comtesse de Ségur, Maximilien Robespierre, the Marquis de Sade and the Marquis de Condorcet. The guest bedrooms are very spacious and each has a beautiful bathroom with a bath and shower, with wood-panelled walls. In the attic under the beautiful rafters is a huge space with an office area, a sofa and a lounge where guests can relax and enjoy delightful views of the surrounding countryside. Huge paintings by François and life-size portraits of friends and animals decorate the walls of the house. Breakfast is served in the huge guests’ dining room, on a large table with pretty linen and crockery, opposite the open fire. A warmly welcoming address in the beautiful Aubrac district which is both austere and attractive.
