The pretty medieval town of Bellême, perched on a hilltop, is full of character. It is well-preserved and among its beautiful houses is the Hôtel de Suhard, a sixteenth-century townhouse that has been changed by its many inhabitants through the ages. Today the B&B’s bedrooms and suites are named after some of the families who lived here. We salute the current owners for their superb work in renovating and redecorating this beautiful house that has brought it back to life. Whilst ensuring that the house’s atmosphere is retained, they have created different, pleasant ambiances in each room through their (sometimes daring) choices of furniture, ornaments, materials and colours. To enter, you walk through a large carriage entrance into a courtyard garden surrounded by buildings, parts of which have been converted into the B&B. The large, welcoming lounge has an open fireplace and the luminous dining-room is where breakfast is served on a large communal table. A large timber staircase leads up to the guest bedrooms and suites on the first and second floors. They are very attractive, with their flagstone floors, their ceiling beams and their carefully-chosen furniture. However, their ensuite bathrooms are quite different from the old-fashioned bathrooms of yesteryear! Strolling through the streets of Bellême, or hunting for mushrooms in the nearby forest or visiting the remarkable local gardens are some of the things you can do while staying at this very beautiful B&B.
