Kloetings tuincafe

Kloetinge (Goes), Netherlands

Henny Menken's pretty old house is situated in the picturesque village of Kloetinge. The front door hints at what you will find inside. The guest bedroom is delightful: it is very spacious and funished with twin beds, a writing-desk, a lounge area and a modern bathroom. The decoration is in different shades of blue, creating an overall Mediterranean atmosphere. This colourful house was the home of the painter Gerard Menken, and many of his paintings hang on the walls. Henny went into the B&B business because she enjoys meeting people and telling them about the culture, art and attractions of the Zeeland countryside. Breakfast is served in the bedroom or on the terrace if weather permits. Henny has also created a romantic garden, complete with dovecote, which she tends lovingly and with care.

La Haute Chambre

Beussent, France

Josiane and Daniel Barsby have revived this pretty house by converting it to include five guest rooms and an artist's studio. After 35 years of designing lace in Calais, Daniel has turned to painting and sculpture. His gallery and studio are worth making a detour to see! As for Josiane, she has very tastefully furnished and decorated five sumptuous guest rooms. They are furnished with antiques and are warm and comfortable, and each has its own bathroom. Breakfast is served in the delightful dining room which is next door to the guests' lounge. Daniel's works of art can be seen in his studio in a wing of the house, in the gallery or in the 9-hectare park surrounding the house. A short distance away is the historic town of Montreuil. Desvres, Le Touquet, Boulogne and the "Opal Coast" are all worth visiting.

La Chambre d'à côté

Aische-en-Refail, Belgium

Located on the village square in Aische-en-Refail in the Hesbaye region near Namur, this beautiful brick and blue granite house has converted with great good taste into a B&B by a husband-and-wife team of architects. To get to the house, you cross a pretty garden, designed by Kervyn and Anne-Catherine, the current owners. Anne-Catherine makes floral decorations for a living. The guest rooms are in the right-hand wing of the house. On the ground floor is a suite with its own front door, which leads to a delightful lounge with a fireplace, books, magazines and CDs, an ideal place to spend an enjoyable "evening in" by the fire or to relax after a walk or bicycle ride in the surrounding countryside. Both the lounge and the bedroom are very tastefully decorated, with natural materials used for the furnishings and walls painted in warm colours. Upstairs, the newly opened loft is larger. It also has a lounge , dining room, fitted kitchen, bedroom and bathroom, all decorated in more contemporary style, a blend of designer and shabby chic, in warm hues of grey and green. The gourmet breakfasts are served in your suite or in the guests' lounge or in the garden, when the weather permits. A very high-quality establishment, where you can spend a relaxing stay in the countryside, while remaining close to Brussels and Namur.

Le Charnois

Limelette, Belgium

This turreted villa was built in 1903, set back from the road and surrounded by fields. The house and its garden form the backdrop for several pieces of Véronique Wéry's sculpture. On the first floor are two guest rooms with en-suite facilities. On the second floor are three guest rooms lit by Velux windows, which share a fully-equipped bathroom and a kitchenette. Breakfast is taken with the owners' family in the beautiful ground-floor dining room. In contrast to the simple furniture and decoration, the welcome is really warm, deep and friendly here. Both Véronique and Jean-Marc obviously enjoy meeting new people and sharing their enthusiasms.
