Dar Nejma

Tozeur, Tunisia

Down a narrow street from the medina of Tozeur, a discreet small door gives access to this oasis of calm, coolness and beauty. The shadowy entrance hall opens onto an internal courtyard with a superb pool of green water, surrounded by luxurious vegetation, including a huge date palm. Various lounges and dining rooms painted in shimmering colours open off all sides of the courtyard and offer guests ideal places to eat or relax. Another courtyard is linked to the first by a series of arches, with a shallower pool surrounded by walls of brick and moucharabiehs. Most of the suites can be accessed via external staircases. Each suite has a huge bedroom, a large lounge, a bathroom and a terrace. The décor is surprising, as is the design of the furniture, the choice of colours and the bathroom fittings. The owners have demonstrated their unbridled creativity and daring here, while respecting traditional sub-Saharan colours, Berber craftsmanship, motifs and materials. In addition there are pools heated all year round that can be used for swimming, a superb Turkish bath with a ceiling decorated with stars and a room for massages, which are most welcome after a walk through the medina and its souks or a hike in the desert or through the mountain oases.

At its centre is a pretty, shady patio with a refreshing wall fountain. Opening onto the patio is a huge lounge, decorated in traditional style with ochre-painted walls and a palm-timber ceiling. The bedrooms are spread over the ground and first floors and are named after the districts of Tozeur. Overlooking the patio or the street, they are spacious and equipped with all the comforts you would expect, with lounge areas and desks. It is owned by Serge Schoonbroodt, a member of a famous musical family and well-known concert organist, and he welcomes his guests in person. They have all modern comforts, including flat-screen TV, WiFi, mini-bar and very sophisticated sound and lighting systems. And if you don’t feel like dining out, or if you have chosen the “Sensory Awakening” package, Ariane will cook you a delicious evening meal, served on the terrace or in the dining room. Main Street Hotel

Ieper, Belgium

The pretty, small town of Ypres has been marked by history. Almost entirely rebuilt after the two world wars, it has managed to retain its soul. Various walking trails allow visitors to explore its mediaeval past or to walk along the city walls modernised in the seventeenth century by Vauban or to go through the monumental Menin Gate, which commemorates 170,000 British and Commonwealth soldiers killed nearby during the First World War whose bodies were never recovered. The town is a popular destination for British, Commonwealth and American "remembrance tourists". 'Main street hotel' refers to the city of Ieper but also to the main street of Disneyland. Your hostess Carine has a lovely sense of humour and her decoration of her guest rooms reveals the different sides of her imagination. From the entrance hall, you go through some cosy lounges with leather armchairs, unusual lamps and ornaments. Breakfast is served in the dining room which overlooks the back garden and which has a large stained-glass skylight. The beautifully presented breakfast buffet includes cheese, cooked meats, pâtés, fruit juices and sparkling wine, all produced locally. The "Pottery" and "Atelier" guest rooms have private terraces adjoining the courtyard. The "Atelier" room also has a superb round jacuzzi bath complete with a television. The "Glory" and "Experiment" rooms are on the first floor and the "Top" and "Wild" rooms are on the second floor. The rooms are decorated in surprising styles, and each is furnished to create a unique atmosphere. The ensuite bathrooms are sumptuous and most have televisions, and there is every comfort a small hotel ought to offer: flat-screen TV, internet, free minibar, Nespresso coffee machine, wine and sweets. A "top" address!

La Villa 1901

Nancy, France

While you may pass the facade of this huge Art Nouveau house on one of Nancy's main boulevards without noticing it, the decoration of its interior and its garden with several small pavilions are well worth discovering. For Mrs Jung has finally given in to her passion: interior design! She has extraordinary taste and dares to blend colours and to use beautiful materials and to bring together objects with a prediliction for those from the 1950s and 1960s. Her favourite brands are Rock The Kasbah, Caravana, Gervasoni and Harmony, and their products can also be found in the small pavilions in the garden where they are for sale in a concept store. She has named each guest bedroom after one of her children and has created a unique atmosphere in each. You feel at ease in them, everything is beautiful, even the bathrooms have their own personalities which are always in harmony with the bedrooms. The suite in the attic is all white, somewhat reminiscent of a mountain chalet. By contrast, she hasn't shied away from using black and dark grey for the floors and walls of the ground floor lounge and dining room. Touches of colour are brought by pretty Persian carpets, very comfortable armchairs and large paintings. The elevated terrace which overlooks the garden welcomes guests for breakfast, served on a large modern table, during the summer months. A beautiful address in Nancy which combines a warm welcome, comfort and interior design.
