La Forestière

Le Hohwald, France

Located in a mountain village, surrounded by forest and meadows,''La Forestièr'' is well-named. It is at the end of a small private road off the main road and enjoys superb views over the surrounding countryside. It was built a few years ago in contemporary style in stone and wood. Inside, in the lounge, dining room and other rooms,''nobl'' materials such as slate floors, lime-washed walls and solid oak doors are complemented by designer furniture. The five guest rooms and suites upstairs have a very ''cocoonin'' atmosphere, enhanced by their parquet floors, their pale-hued walls and a range of traditional local objects and furniture The pretty embroidered bed and household linen is particularly lovely. On some evenings, Catherine and Eric offer evening meals featuring regional specialities that make the most of the excellent local produce, including game (one of Eric’s specialities) as well as other more unusual dishes, such as fig tarte Tatin, wild-boar ham or pumpkin gratin with gingerbread… And to help digest all that, there are plenty of lovely local walks through the forest waymarked by the Club Vosgien. For guests who want to discover more, there is a wine route and pretty villages with half-timbered buildings nearby.

Un matin dans les bois

Loison sur Crequoise , France

You will find''Le Domaine du Fresnoy'' on the edge of the road that leads from the village of Loison through the fields to a small wood. It is well-hidden amid the greenery and is a delightful seventeenth-century family home built of brick and tufa stone which dates back to the era of the Knights Templar! Some of the outbuildings have been converted into three superb guest bedrooms and a family suite. Each has its own style and decor and each is named after a famous ornithologist - John Latham, Thomas Bewick, John James Audubon and Tory Petersen. The rooms are decorated in natural materials, clear colours and furniture and ornaments picked up here and there with a link to the names of the bedrooms. It goes without saying that your hosts love nature and birds. Bird guides and binoculars are available, as are lanterns for nocturnal walks in the woods. Several areas of the garden have been laid out for relaxation, including a sofa with a view, seats under a large tree, hammocks and the patio around the swimming pool. You can also cycle around the countryside, visit some local abbeys, parks and gardens or travel to the nearby coast.''Un Matin Dans Les Bois'' was one of our favourite discoveries and well worth booking a stay!

Arrest en Baie

Arrest, France

Why not stay by Stéphanie and Sacha in the Bay of the Somme area? They are restoring this old farmhouse built around a courtyard with its cob walls: at the moment it is a work-in-progress but most of the major work has been completed! The old walls have been restored to their original colour and the old wood-pannelling in the bedrooms has been uncovered, restoring their stylish atmosphere. The interior walls have been painted in warm hues, with murals by Stéphane here and there. Each guest room has its own decorative style and has a huge private bathroom with an Italian-style shower, except for the room on the top floor which has a small shower cubicle, but which has a delightful lounge area under the loggia. The breakfast room is on the opposite side of the courtyard in a small wing reserved for guests, with its own terrace. The warm atmosphere is heightened by coloured chairs, ornaments and hand-made lamps (which are for sale) and other ornaments made of fabric by your hostess. Guests may also store drinks and food in a large fridge. Your hostess's sister, Corinne Souchon, runs the nearby B&B Le Presbytère.

Lai l’Oiseau

Érezée, Belgium

These two delightful guest rooms with naturally-tinted lime-washed walls are in an annexe of the house which is situated between the village and the woods. Both rooms are warm with yellow or ochre patinas and woodwork, and are furnished with beautiful pine wardrobes imported from Poland. In the autumn, guests will hear stags bellowing, and will frequently see deer in the field opposite. Breakfast includes fresh local and home-made produce, including, from time to time, Cécile’s delicious apple and millet soufflés. Jean-Pierre and Cécile Stas Voisin receive their guests like old friends. They will be pleased to advise you on the best local walks or mountain-bike rides and can lend you binoculars, Jean-Pierre's hand-drawn maps and guidebooks written by Cécile, an historian. And should you ever get lost, Jean-Pierre will saddle up his thoroughbred horse and come and find you and set you off on the right path again.

B&B Setola

Brugge, Belgium

Lut’s pleasure at welcoming her guests from around the world is obvious. Bruno’s graphic design studio is on the ground floor of this fine eighteenth-century townhouse. The guest bedrooms are on the second floor. They are large and filled with daylight and each has a private bathroom. The sober contemporary décor is softened by the original beams and the delightful hues in which the walls have been painted. The two bedrooms which overlook the street have sofa-beds where a third guest can sleep. The generous buffet breakfasts are served on the landing on separate tables. Given its location right in the historic town centre, a stone’s throw from the market square, this B&B offers excellent value for money.

De Nachtegaal

Damme, Belgium

Damme is like a miniature version of Flanders: every stone of its buildings could tell the story of the Middle Ages and its splendid Burgundian history. This delightful small town is well and truly on the gastronomic map, but, strangely, there are very few places to stay there. "The Nightingale" is thus even more of a find. Stephan and Lina offer two guest bedrooms in their traditional farmhouse set amid the polders a stone's throw from Damme. On the ground floor, the pink "Garden" room overlooks the garden and is the largest. The other room, upstairs, "Dammekamer" is just as comfortable and has a small bathroom. The copious breakfasts include fresh fruit juice, home-made jams, Damme cheese and eggs from the hens in the garden. They are served in the lounge with fireplace or on the terrace in the warmer months. You can also enjoy the large garden and heated pool. A friendly place where you will be really warmly welcomed by convivial hosts.
