Villa Balat

Namur, Belgium

This beautifully renovated early 19th century villa lies on the banks of the river Maas, with views to the Citadel and the Walloon Parliament. The building is attributed to well-known architect Alphonse Balat, court architect of King Leopold II. This splendid, spacious villa with plenty of natural light and a carefully renovated interior is particularly stylishly decorated using clear, light colours and expertly selected furniture. The three rooms are dedicated to three 19th century Walloon artists: The Anna Boch room is located at the rear of the villa, overlooking the garden. The soft, romantic pastel colours are evocative of the impressionist style of Anna Boch. The Félicien Rops room with a beautiful view over the river Maas is rather mystical, with its restrained colours, alluring velvet and satin and an exuberantly equipped bathroom with free-standing bathtub. The Balat suite with a wonderful glass-covered terrace overlooks the river Maas. The beautiful transgression of light imparts an elegance to the room which, together with its proud peacock colours, is worthy of Balat. The spacious bathroom has a walk-in shower with art nouveau tiles and an authentic free-standing bathtub. Breakfast is served from local produce in the majestic dining room overlooking the river Maas. You are also welcome to relax in the charming library with a cup of tea or coffee or in the quiet, beautifully landscaped garden. The villa is in walking distance from the historic centre of Namur, an excellent city to visit if you are interested in art, history and cultural heritage. A unique guesthouse!

La Maison d’Hector

Saint Mard de Réno/, France

This B&B is named after Hector, the Jack Russell terrier belonging to Pierre-Yves, and he is omnipresent, in the decor, on the sign and business stationery and you may also bump into him in real life! This traditional Le Perche longhouse has been carefully converted into a B&B by Pierre-Yves, who is an interior designer. He has given each room its own personality: the entrance hall where guests are welcomed and can leave their shoes; the richly-decorated lounge filled with books, magazines, engravings and other unusual ornaments and the cosy dining room, where gourmet breakfasts, including home-made jams and pastries, are served. On request, Pierre-Yves will prepare set-menu evening meals using vegetables, herbs and fruit from his garden. Upstairs, the guest bedrooms will surprise you with their interesting colours, their furniture and ornaments picked up here and there and their ensuite shower rooms. Their names tell you something about the philosophy that guides your hosts: ‘’Mauvaises graines’’, ‘’Belles de nuit’’ and ‘’Poules de luxe’’ which refer to the herbs, flowers and chickens in the garden. The pretty Perche region is not short of attractions, including churches, manor houses, gardens and jumble sales, not to mention the themed weekends organised at the B&B in each season of the year.

Etienne runs this B&B in his family’s home, built in the 1960s by his parents at Humain, not far from Marche-en-Famenne. Perched on a hilltop, surrounded by around 20 hectares of fields and woods, the house enjoys superb views over the surrounding countryside. Built of local stone and half-timbering, the house is low and long, rather like a traditional Normandy longhouse. The guest bedrooms are upstairs under the eaves and can accommodate two couples or a family with children. In the evenings, Etienne can prepare a meal for you cooked on the wood-fired grill on the verandah, where you can eat it, washed down with some excellent red wine. Peace and quiet, space and views are the main attractions of the B&B, not to mention the swimming pool and tennis court, to which guests have access.
