Le Grand Caugy

Bayeux, France

Located in the midst of beautiful green countryside a stone’s throw from Bayeux, “Le Grand Caugy” welcomes guests and their horses. It is a working stud farm and is made up of several buildings laid out around a large courtyard garden. The main building contains two guest bedrooms on the first floor, which are simple but comfortable. Then come the stables with the horses, then the outbuilding, which contains four modern guest rooms, one of which, on the ground floor, is accessible by reduced-mobility guests. Next to the outbuilding is a huge hall with a lounge area where breakfast is served. In another wing is a large reception room that can be used for weddings, seminars or meetings. It opens onto a flower-filled garden and the meadows where the horses graze. No evening meals are availble, but Bayeux is only a few kilometres away, or there is a fitted kitchen with a fridge and microwave for guests to prepare their own meals. There are many waymarked bridleways along the seashore, in the woods or in the countryside. One of the most beautiful golf courses in France is nearby, as well as beaches for fans of sailing, surfing or land-sailing. More curious guests can explore the charming town of Bayeux and its tapestry, the D-Day landing beaches and the Caen memorial, all of which are nearby.

Domaine du Freyche

Lugon, France

Le Domaine du Freyche is a manor house with a farm and stables, in the depths of the countryside surrounded by the Fronsadais vineyards on the outskirts of St Emilion. A beautiful house, surrounded by top-quality countryside, including a delightful flower garden lovingly tended by Carole. With her husband Franck, she recently opened their B&B, which offers two individually decorated guest bedrooms, where unusual ideas have created a relaxed atmosphere that blends with the country setting. Guests in search of an unusual experience can opt to stay in the luxurious Airstream caravan, parked in the garden a short distance from the house, so they can dream and imagine themselves in another world. The breakfast room is a lovely place where the owners enjoy meeting their guests and talking about their passions, which include horse-riding (the B&B is a “Relais Equestre”), going to jumble sales, gardening, travelling and vintage cars. On request, guests can rent the E-type or MK2 Jaguar cars and take them out for a spin. Le Domaine du Freyche is also an excellent base from which to explore the Bordeaux vineyards, particularly St Emilion, Libourne, Bourg-sur-Gironde and, of course, Bordeaux itself. Another attraction is the River Dordogne with its excellent riverside fish restaurants. A B&B for lovers of peace and quiet, with the added bonus of a delightful, relaxed couple of owners who are always a pleasure to meet.

Les Domaines de Patras

Solérieux , France

Surrounded by fields of lavender and meadows full of grazing sheep and horses, this superb traditional farmhouse, with its large water trough and arcades, looks good. Access is via a pretty courtyard with a fountain and plenty of corners to relax in the shade. Breakfast is also served there in fine weather. In the evenings, or on cooler mornings, guests are welcomed to the lounge and dining room, with their vaulted ceilings, to enjoy their breakfast or dinner. Three times each week, Breda puts on her apron and prepares pleasant and simple set-menu meals, washed down with local wines. The six guest rooms and suites with sweet names such as “An Angel Passes”, “Tender Love” and “Powder White”, are comfortable and tastefully furnished and decorated. The suites have small lounges and are larger than the guest rooms. The huge garden and swimming pool are great places to relax for a while, but the main attraction of this B&B is the beautiful equestrian centre and stables where beginners can have their first experience of horse riding, or where more experienced riders can train, or where horse owners can simply stable their horses.

La Nesquière

Pernes les Fontaines, France

The house takes its name from the River La Nesque which flows through the bottom of its garden to join the River Sorgue. The river ensures the luxuriance of the plants which surround this former vineyard owner's house, now converted into a B&B. Several guest bedrooms and family suites are offered in various parts of the house. On the ground floor, guests have access to lounges and the dining room, where breakfast and evening meals are served on some evenings, prepared using fresh local produce. Guests can also prepare their own meals in the kitchenette or the summer kitchen. At the end of the building is a large games room with a pinball machine, table-football and ping-pong for guests of all ages to enjoy. Horse and pony riding is available at the Sunny Ranch nearby, along with riding lessons and pony-trekking. In this family-run B&B every member of the family lends a hand: your hostess manages the rooms, her mother does the cooking, her father looks after the garden and her brother looks after the horses. An ideal place for a family holiday with plenty of activities to occupy the children during their stay.

Au Pré Sabot

Marche-lez-Ecaussinnes, Belgium

The name of the street was probably destined to welcome this B&B where horse-riders are welcome. The property has a dressage area, meadows and stables for the horses. One wing of the house which overlooks a pretty courtyard garden contains the guest accommodation, with a huge living-room with a dining area and bar-style kitchen area. Next to this is a small doorway leading to the sumptuous indoor swimming pool which guests may use. A pretty cast-iron spiral staircase leads up to the guest bedrooms. They are very tastefully decorated and furnished in soft hues with beautiful bed linen. They share a bathroom. The B&B is located close to Ecaussines Castle, the boat-lifts at Stept-Bracquenies, the inclined plane at Ronquières and the town of Binche, famous for its carnival parade...all attractions that are not to be missed!

La Villageoise

Trun, France

This complex of buildings with its internal courtyard and stables was originally a thirteenth-century post inn, then a hospice run by the Knights Hospitalers, before becoming a hotel and now a B&B. It's certainly had plenty of practice in welcoming guests over the centuries! Located at the crossroads in the hamlet of Trun in the depths of the Norman countryside, with its odours of cider and Calvados, as well as Livarot and Camembert cheese, it is only two hours from Paris and 80km from the coast. In the oldest part of the building, overlooking a connecting passageway, the three pretty en-suite guest rooms are full of charm. In another part of the building, overlooking the road, is a two-bedroom suite, made up of two double bedrooms and a bathroom, which is perfect for groups of friends or families. Guests also have access to a large lounge and, of course, the dining room on the ground floor. The breakfast is served in the dining room, where evening meals are also available on request. A delightful country base to explore the interesting architectural and natural heritage of the Pays d'Auge region.

La Tour Blanche

Forest Montiers, France

Set in the middle of a beautiful wooded park, "La Tour Blanche" is an eighteenth-century manor-house and has all the old-fashioned charm you would expect of an old French country house. It is ideally located on the edge of the village of Forest-Montiers, between the Crécy forest and the Somme estuary, so guests can enjoy both the seaside and inland scenery. They can also admire (and ride on request) the horses that run free in the meadows around the house. The guest rooms are called "Framboise", "Verte", "Beige" and "Bleue" and are charmingly decorated in old-fashioned style with antique furniture and monochrome fabrics. In addition, each room has a beautiful and comfortable en-suite bathroom. Guests can also enjoy the Green lounge, the Red lounge and several dining-rooms, where the breakfasts and evening meals are served. A delightful B&B where you are assured of a warm welcome from the owners and their young children.
