La Girarde

Saint Quentin de Caplong, France

When Mark and Patricia moved to France 18 years ago, they focussed on the Sainte-Foy-la-Grande district, between St Emilion and Bergerac. They made use of their culinary and building restoration skills to set up and develop a hotel-restaurant, then, in 2009, they purchased “La Girarde”, an old eighteenth-century house, which they have transformed into a haven of comfort, atmosphere and wellbeing. The five spacious guest bedrooms are named after flowers and are tastefully furnished and decorated, with views over the surrounding countryside. The furniture, fabrics and wall coverings create a calm, peaceful atmosphere in both the bedrooms and their ensuite bathrooms. The ensuite bathroom of the “Chardons” bedroom is particularly large. The convivial atmosphere in the comfortable lounge is enhanced by the instinctive empathy of your hosts for their guests. Nestling in countryside and vineyards, “La Girarde” is close to Saint Emilion, home to some of the most famous vineyards in the world, and only 12km from Sainte-Foy-la-Grande, a pretty hilltop village where one of the most beautiful markets in France is held. There are also plenty of excellent local restaurants: “Le Château de Sanse” at Sainte-Radegonde and “L’Ardoise” at Pessac-sur-Dordogne, not forgetting Patricia’s own evening meals at €27 per person, excluding drinks. Access to the area is facilitated by flights to Bergerac airport, a 40-minute drive from “La Girarde”.

Grange de Jusalem

Mazan, France

You will find the Grange de Jusalem in a rustic landscape, surrounded by vineyards. Formerly a small farm, it has been converted into a B&B and restaurant. The speciality of this place is Maryvonne’s contemporary take on the traditional food of Provence. Access to the guest bedrooms is through a pretty courtyard shaded by a mulberry tree, where meals are served in the warmer months. At other times, they are served in the huge dining room, with large windows letting in plenty of light, on beautiful porcelain, with silver cutlery. The three guest bedrooms are spread around the building: one is on the ground floor, another upstairs and the third in an annexe behind the house, overlooking the garden and offering more privacy. A beautiful long swimming pool is located away from the house. This is an excellent base for exploring the region’s rich and varied heritage on foot, by bike or on horseback. From Mont Ventoux to La Fontaine de Vaucluse, via Sénanque Abbey, Gordes and Vaison-la-Romaine. In the summer it is within easy travelling distance of the lively festivals at Avignon, Orange, Gordes and Vaison.

A la Ferme

Osthouse, France

Located at the heart of the village of Osthouse, south of Strasbourg, this eighteenth-century Alsatian farmhouse is simply superb. Beautifully well-preserved, with its half-timbereing and its china-blue rendering, it oozes charm. Lived in by generations of the same family, it has now been converted into a charming hotel. Three of the guest bedrooms have been furnished and decorated in the same rather rustic style as the building, but with beautiful, modern bathrooms. The other guest rooms are in the former stables, also beautifully decorated and furnished with timber balconies and red-hued walls. Some more modern, very comfortable guest rooms with beautiful bathrooms and balconies overlook the garden and the courtyard. You will enjoy charm at all price and comfort levels, from “Standard” to “Grand Confort”. In the morning, you can enjoy a sumptuous buffet breakfast laid out in the dining room with a wide range of fresh produce and seasonal fruit. Not satisfied with being hoteliers, Brigitte and Jean-Philippe are also restaurateurs and offer inventive, seasonal dishes in their restaurant ‘’A l’Aigle d’Or’’ in the village. Both hotel and restaurant are real family-run establishments, where parents, children, and soon grandchildren, work together in a friendly, warm and professional atmosphere.

Ilôt Vignes

Saint-Emilion (Rauzan), France

‘’The Isle of Vines’’ (Ilôt Vignes) evokes both the vineyards that surround this B&B and also the Caribbean island of Martinique, where Claudie owns another hotel. The names of the bedrooms are linked to both of these areas, some exotic such as ‘’Bamboo’’ and ‘’Safari’’, other closer to home such as ‘’Vines’’ and ‘’Countryside’’. The fifth bedroom, named “1,001 Nights”, will transport you to another world. Claudie and her husband bought a ruined annexe to the chateau of Taris, and have converted it into a very comfortable and convivial B&B. The bedrooms are large and are equipped with air-conditioning and TVs, plus very beautiful bathrooms. Claudie’s spontaneous and happy welcome explains why many of her guests come back each year, some also taking a winter break at her hotel in Martinique. Her many years of service as an air hostess for Air France and British Airways shows in her sense of customer service, her friendly way of dealing with people and her knowledge of the many countries she has visited. Her evening meals vary from the exotic to the more familiar, and sometimes involve a barbecue. She loves to talk about her passions: cooking, interior design and travel. Claudie can also organise zumba, tai-chi and shiatsu classes, she can teach Creole cooking lessons or she can lead guided tours of the nearby Bordeaux chateaux.

Les Secrets de Cézanne

Mazan , France

The ground floor is almost all given over to guests and has a lounge with a wood-burning stove, snooker table and large dining table. Agnès has worked in the food industry for many years and offers set-menu evening meals using fresh local produce on request. In the Low Season, she also offers cookery classes for small groups. The “Paul” bedroom on the first floor is spacious and has an attached dormitory bedroom for children. The “Hortense” room in the attic is smaller and very cosy. Both have beautiful private bathrooms. La Maison du Prince de Condé

Charroux, France

Charroux is a village tucked into the greenery on its hilltop, hidden from invaders. Winner of the “Most Beautiful Village in France” title, its buildings include the former home of the Prince de Condé, a leading Huguenot during the Wars of Religion. The beautiful 16th-century building incorporates a 13th-century defensive tower, and today it has been converted into a five-bedroom B&B decorated and furnished in classic style with four-poster beds and antique furniture, which contrast with contemporary-style bathrooms with jacuzzis. The “Eléonore” family suite’s two bedrooms are ideal for visiting families. The “Prince” and “Médicis” rooms are larger and more sumptuous with four-poster beds. The “Dames” room is smaller but very cosy. The tower has been converted into a room on two floors with lovely views of the village and the surrounding countryside. Guests can enjoy delicious meals at the ‘’La Table du Prince” restaurant in a new building attached to the B&B. It has been awarded the ‘’Restaurant de qualité’’ award for its use of fresh local produce. Thierry Paris makes his own foie gras which is well-known and has won several prizes. La Suite Sans cravate

Brugge, Belgium

Everything began with the “Sans Cravate” restaurant, opened 10 years ago by Henk Van Oudenhove, who had done his apprenticeship in several famous Belgian restaurants. Today his restaurant has a star in the Michelin Guide and offers dishes with interesting combinations of flavours, colours and highly refined perfumes. The B&B came later, located in a beautiful sixteenth-century townhouse almost opposite the restaurant. This is the kingdom of Véronique Bogaert, Henk’s wife! She is an amateur sculptress and her figures can be found all over the B&B and the restaurant. She has great good taste and has decorated this sumptuous B&B. The tone is set as soon as you walk through the large, glazed front door. There is a small, amusing dining room overlooking the street with light fittings shaped like Magritte’s bowler hats, hung over semi-circular tables where breakfast is served on pretty porcelain designed by Pieter Stockmans. Guests will find it difficult to choose between the beautiful, huge suites named ‘’Pinot Noir’’, ‘’Riesling’’ and ‘’Sauvignon Blanc”. They have a warm ambiance, created by their exposed beams, warm-hued walls and large wall paintings of birds or woods at the head of each bed. Each suite has a beautiful designer bathroom separated from the bedroom by a glass wall. Of course, the bedrooms offer every comfort (WiFi internet access, i-Pod, Nespresso machine, mini-bar, safe, dressing gowns, air-conditioning, etc.). A top-quality address for lovers of space, comfort, art and good food.

La Feuillaie

Saint Ay , France

''La Feuillai'' evokes the gentle lifestyle of the French countryside, in the Loire valley among other regions. Located between Blois and Orléans, on the right bank of the River Loire, this eighteenth-century manor house is at the heart of the hamlet of Saint Ay. Hidden behind walls and hedges, the house is surrounded by a large park with a lake bordered by beautiful trees. On the ground floor, guests have access to lounges (with billiard table, piano, bookshelves and open fireplace), a huge entrance hall and a dining room. Upstairs are five beautiful, huge guest bedrooms, overlooking the garden, each with a poetic name : ''Ultime Elégance'' with its chintz wallpaper ; ''Vision Singulière'' with its old-fashioned bath ; ''Présumée Innocente'' decorated in Baroque style in shades of violet, black and gold ; ''Symbolique Essentielle'' with its mahogany furniture, and ''Chicissime'' with warm-hued walls and woodwork. The decor is very sophisticated, with many family heirlooms and pieces picked up here and there over the years, which enhances the charms of the guest bedrooms and makes it difficult to choose between them. And, to top it all is Philippe’s cooking! He is a passionate and very creative cook (his library includes no less than 400 cookery books). He delights in concocting delicious bistro-style meals or grand celebration dinners, which will dazzle you. These meals are served on pretty tables, each uniquely laid by Véronique. A sophisticated address where guests immediately feel good and which is ideally situated for touring the Loire valley.

La Forge

Saint-Quentin-de-Baron, France

Your hostess at La Forge is Carol de Montrichard, a dynamic and attractive lady who is full of ideas and information. After arriving from the USA in the Gironde region, not far from Bordeaux, she quickly developed a passion for French cooking and wine. Today she can help you explore both of these through her set-menu evening meals or her cookery classes (in her kitchen or in those of various local chefs) or on her guided tours which combine cookery classes with visits to gardens, artists’ studios and antique shops…quite an itinerary! Her house is built around an old blacksmith’s smithy and oozes charm. The small courtyard is smothered in vegetation and leads to a gite that sleeps two in the old smithy and a large guest bedroom with a bathroom and terrace opening ont the garden. In the main house, upstairs, are three guest bedrooms decorated in soft hues with pretty quilts on the beds and also on the walls! The two double bedrooms and one single bedroom share two beautiful bathrooms. If your group includes children, then they can use the charming dormitory used by Carol’s grandchildren when they come to visit. Behind the house, the vines give way to a huge, prettily planted garden with a small orchard of fruit trees, which produce delicious cherries among other fruits!
