La Cimentelle

Etaules, France

Just outside Avallon, in a landscape of green valleys, La Cimentelle has quite a story to tell. It was originally built in the nineteenth century as a cement factory, then it was used as the village school, then, in the 1970s, it was purchased by the grandparents of the current owners. Then, a few years ago, the current owners converted it into a B&B and made it their full-time job. Today it is a small family-run business where everyone lends a hand. All the members of the family enjoy cooking and each has their specialities, which gives the B&B guests a rich and varied choice of evening meals. The guest rooms and suites have their own private entrance: on the first floor are three prettily furnished rooms each with a private bathroom, and on the second floor are two large suites with two bedrooms and a shared lounge and bathroom. Breakfasts and evening meals are served on the verandah in front of the building. This beautiful house is surrounded by a large garden with a lake, a beautiful orangery (which can be used as a games room or a reception room) and a surprising swimming pool in the ruins of the old cement factory.

Sapere

Riemst, Belgium

Manon and Jan decided to set up their restaurant with a few B&B rooms in an old farmhouse laid out in traditional style around a courtyard, opposite the delightful Château de Genoelselderen vineyards. They called it “Sapere”, a reference to “good taste”, but also meaning “to dare”, “to know” and “to undertake”. Manon is the cook and designs the “Poorthoeve” and “Sapere” set menus, based on fresh, local, seasonal, organic produce. The set menus are only available at weekends and on certain public holidays. The restaurant is in a wing of the house overlooking the courtyard and has tables laid out in a series of small rooms. In the opposite wing are five guest rooms on all the floors of the building. They are decorated in warm hues and have wooden floors, exposed ceiling beams and antique furniture and ornaments picked up here and there. On the ground floor is a dining room, fitted kitchen and small lounge. They overlook the courtyard and are very atmospheric. This is a friendly B&B where you can combine dinner and B&B and use as a perfect base from which to explore this region, which is particularly beautiful in spring when the fruit trees are in blossom.

L'Auberge de la Source

Saint-Ouen-sur-Morin , France

Located at the heart of the pretty village of Saint-Ouen-sur-Morin, this inn has all the charm you would expect from a small hotel in the French provinces. Formerly a favourite of artists from Montmartre, it has been renovated by its new owner. On the ground floor is the lounge, bar, dining room and terrace, which guests can enjoy at different times of the day. Brightly-coloured paintings on the walls create different ambiances in each room. An alley behind the hotel leads to the large garden with a swimming pool, a reception area and bar, which is open to guests in the warmer months. The eight guest bedrooms are spread over several floors: “Charme” category rooms, junior suites and deluxe suites, different sizes for different budgets. Each has a private bathroom or shower-room. The bedrooms are decorated soberly but tastefully. For guests seeking more privacy, there are two more suites available in some beautiful old buildings just outside the village called “Le Rond des Fées” and “Le Vieux Clos”. The hotel’s food is famous and good-value set-menu meals are available at €29 or €39 at lunchtime and dinnertime. A lovely place for a country escape, close to Paris and the Champagne region.

Mont-Dol, France

Perched on Mont-Dol, between Saint-Malo and Mont-Saint-Michel, the castle which is named after it looks out over the plain. At the foot of its walls is a series of delightful gardens, ponds and a vegetable garden. Yannick, who was born in Brittany, decided to return to his home country and open a B&B and restaurant here. A former restaurant chef in Paris, the kitchen is his domain, and he is assisted by a small team who welcome guests and look after the bedrooms. The guest bedrooms are simple but tasteful, decorated in soft hues. Guests have access to the huge lounge, with cosy corners on the ground floor, overlooking the garden. Breakfast is served here. à l'ombre bleue

Mittainville, France

Is the name of this B&B "L'Ombre Bleue" (The Blue Shadow) an allusion to the Wistaria that covers the walls or to the cocktail based on Curacao or to the Impressionist painting technique? Whatever the answer, you are assured of a warm welcome to this peaceful oasis by Catherine. Catherine will happily allow you to taste her latest culinary creation, usually starting with a glass of her home-made apéritif! At the entrance of the court, in a separate building, la "Petite Maison au-dessus des Nuages" (The little house above the clouds) with its own small lounge on the ground floor and the bedroom and bathroom upstairs does offers privacy. Two rooms have been furnished in the old barn at the back of the court. "Entre ciel et terre" (Between Heaven and Earth) is fresh and bright with its extra beds in mezzanine and "La chambres des Muses" (House of Muses) cozier with its beautiful bathroom. A delightfully charming address located not far from Paris.
