Gaussignac

Saint-Hubert (Hatrival), Belgium

Despite its name, Gaussignac is not in the Dordogne, but in the Ardennes! It's the name given by Françoise and Michel Goosse to their B&B in the village of Hatrival, a stone's throw from St Hubert. The traditional Ardennes farmhouse has been comprehensively renovated and offers four beautiful guest bedrooms named after types of local stone including slate, schist and galet. Although not very large, they are very cosy with walls painted in soft hues and top-quality, comfortable bed-linen. And another plus is the excellent food cooked by Michel Goosse! It is based on fresh, local, seasonal, produce from the local market. His vast and varied culinary experience has many inspirations. For nature lovers, there is a wide choice of local walks. For culture lovers there is St Hubert, Transinne, Redu, Bastogne or Bouillon, which are also excellent end-points for walks and full of things to discover.

Gasterie Lieve Hemel

Sevenum, Netherlands

Here in the depths of the Limberg countryside is a B&B with a decidedly French atmosphere, offering relaxation, wine-tasting and gastronomic food. The B&B's lounge bar is stocked with plenty of interesting wines. It is a large, yet cosy room, with a relaxation area, breakfast and dining area, bar and French windows opening onto the garden. The terrace, with its tables and chairs, is a pleasant place to continue wine-tasting or to eat breakfast or dinner, or to relax in the warmer months. The house is decorated in a subtle mix of traditional and contemporary styles: the lounge has a brick floor and grey-blue patinated walls. The guest bedrooms are upstairs, and are decorated in a similar blend of bluish hues, antique country furniture and lovely bathroom fittings. Located in the Peel & Meuse region with many opportunities for walking and cycling, this place is a veritable haven of comfort, run by a friendly couple with a masterly approach, and who offer wine-tasting evenings and delicious evening meals.

Naninne (Namur), Belgium

"La Marchanderie" is an impressive building, with its boulder and blue-stone walls, the traditional building materials of the nearby Meuse valley. Guests are usually greeted by the owner in his beautiful lounge on the ground floor, with its impressive open fireplace. La Ferme du Vert

Wierre-Effroy, France

Built of local stone, with a large courtyard, you are sure of a warm welcome at "Greenery Farm". Mr & Mrs Bernard have transformed a former working farm into a charming country house hotel. They have passed on the hotel business to two of their sons, who have done further restoration work. Their other two sons run a cheese-making business in a building behind the farmhouse, where they transform milk from a neighbouring farm into delicious cheese that features in the breakfast buffet and on the restaurant's cheeseboard. In the different wings of the building are fifteen guest rooms and one guest suite. The guest rooms are furnished and decorated in country style, with individual touches. Guests are welcome to the large dining room with a roaring log fire in the evenings and to a smaller, more intimate dining room for breakfast. There are also a bar, several lounges and several meeting rooms. L'Empreinte du Temps

Torgny, Belgium

Torgny is the most southerly village in Wallonia and so well deserves its nickname of "Little Provence". Its microclimate is particularly well-suited to vines. Many of the village's listed buildings display their dates of construction (from 1742 to 1882) on their lintels and were built from unusual materials for this area: terracotta rooftiles and beautiful dressed ochre stone. "L'Empreinte du Temps" ("The Imprint of Time") was formerly a school and has now been converted into a charming small hotel with eight rooms and three suites which are all comfortable and prettily decorated with natural materials. In the basement, with a door onto the garden, is the restaurant "La Table de l'Empreinte du Temps" decorated in contemporary style which serves lunch and dinner, with menus changing each month, and a wine list made up of the owner's favourites, with a tendancy to favour organic wines. Guests are served breakfast either in the dining room of "L'Empreinte du Temps" or in that of "La Grappe d'Or" a nearby hotel. We recommend you take a stroll around this pretty Gaume village and perhaps then drive around this beautiful region, rich in heritage, half in Belgium and half in France.

Piloersemaborg

Den Ham, Netherlands

Piloersema was built in 1633 as a country-gentleman's house and was comprehensively restored in 1998 while retaining as many original features as possible. Today it bears witness to the comfortable lifestyle of the Ommeland gentry. The entrance-hall, with its stone-flagged floor and antique furniture, reminds one of a nineteenth-century farmhouse. The beams and wood-panelled walls are painted in a secular style. The five guest rooms and three luxury guest suites are located in the former barn. The tasteful furnishings and decor blend modern comfort with antique charm. Each room has a private terrace. Breakfast can be served in your room or in the pleasant dining room. Not surprisingly, this is a popular choice for business seminars and family holidays. The listed building is also classified as a Dutch National Monument.
