Hainaut is an unusual province because it is home to no less than 19 UNESCO World Heritage Sites and Events. The sites include the twelfth-century Tournai Cathedral, five Civic Belfries built between the twelfth and the twentieth centuries, the Neolithic flint mines at Spiennes, the former coalmines at Le Grand-Hornu, Le Bois-du-Luc and Le Bois du Cazier and the historic Central Canal, with its famous boat-lifts that are jewels of European industrial archaeology. The events include the unmissable Binche Carnival where spectators are pelted with oranges, the Ath Ducasse with its parade of carnival giants and the Mons Ducasse with its dual between St George and the dragon (Le Lumeçon) and five traditional processions in the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse district.
