Gîte de la Ruaudais

Breal-Sous-Montfort, France

“Gîte de la Ruaudais” is an authentic farmstead in the depths of the Brittany countryside, some 18 km from Rennes city centre and 22 km from the Forest of Brocéliande. The first floor of the house is divided into two separate units with a shared entrance. The house has a beautiful enclosed garden. Gîte ”Manège” is a beautiful bright space with a great deal of white and photographic accents courtesy of a family friend, who happens to be a photographer. There is a sleeping area, a lounge and kitchenette and a separate bathroom. Gîte ”Brocéliande” is a spacious gîte with a large lounge and an open fireplace, a dining area and kitchen, a sleeping area and a separate bathroom. The large window in the lounge gives you the feeling that you are in the middle of the countryside. The ”Serein” room is an additional bedroom with two single beds that can be rented together with one of the two gîtes. A fine, quiet location to dream away for a while and to delve into the Arthurian legends.

A Perte de vue

Humain (Marche-en-Famenne) , Belgium

Etienne runs this B&B in his family’s home, built in the 1960s by his parents at Humain, not far from Marche-en-Famenne. Perched on a hilltop, surrounded by around 20 hectares of fields and woods, the house enjoys superb views over the surrounding countryside. Built of local stone and half-timbering, the house is low and long, rather like a traditional Normandy longhouse. On the ground floor is a huge lounge with an open fireplace and large dining table, plus a reading area with large windows overlooking the countryside. The guest bedrooms are upstairs under the eaves and can accommodate two couples or a family with children. In the evenings, Etienne can prepare a meal for you cooked on the wood-fired grill on the verandah, where you can eat it, washed down with some excellent red wine. Peace and quiet, space and views are the main attractions of the B&B, not to mention the swimming pool and tennis court, to which guests have access. Its situation close to three superb golf courses, the River Lesse, the Han caves and many cycling and hiking circuits make it an excellent base for a few day’s stay.

Mas Nouveau

Genolhac, France

On the road to Mont Lozère, in the Cévennes National Park, this farmhouse which used to belong to the Knights Templar has been comprehensively restored by Christine Gerbino. She has transformed it into a marvellous place to recharge your batteries and to enjoy the countryside and its produce. The house is surrounded by meadows which run down to the river, with a jacuzzi carved from the rock, sun loungers and a kitchen garden which provides seasonal vegetables and herbs for Christine’s meals. Further on is an orchard with apple, chestnut, cherry and fig trees and kiwi fruit plants, all used to make home-made fruit juices, jams and desserts! The guest bedrooms and family suites are spread across the different wings of the house and are decorated and furnished in the same spirit. Salvaged timber for the beds, Indian marble for the washbasins, linen for the sheets, only noble materials. It is no surprise that the B&B has been awarded ‘’Cévennes écotourisme’’ and ‘’Esprit Parc National’’ status. There are many opportunities for hiking, walking or donkey-trekking and to discover traditional Cévennes crafts or the wolves of Gévaudan! Onsite, guests can also enjoy the spa, jacuzzi and natural pond, in beautiful natural surroundings.

Château Bouynot/Le Séchoir

Saint-Sauveur-de-Meilhan , France

This group of houses is located in rolling countryside and will delight families looking for a country setting in which to relax. In addition to the idyllic surroundings, you will appreciate the facilities : large monsoon showers, modern fitted kitchens and a private swimming pool for each house. While it would be very tempting to spend your stay enjoying them, the surrounding area is full of places to visit in addition to the Bordeaux and Marmande vineyards and the “French Tuscany” of the Lot & Garonne. The nearby Green Route along the Canal de Garonne is an excellent place for walking or cycling under the shade of the plane trees, or for canoeing or kayaking. Véronique and François, the owners, will be pleased to recommend local places to eat, but you may prefer to visit local food producers to sample their wares, or to shop at the markets in Guyenne. And, what is more, these holiday homes seem to us to offer excellent value for money.

Château Bouynot/La Grange

Saint-Sauveur-de-Meilhan , France

Located on the border of the Gironde and the Lot & Garonne districts, these two magnificent and charming holiday homes surround the Château de Bouynot. “Le Séchoir” has been very sympathetically converted from a traditional building formerly used to dry tobacco leaves. “La Grange” is a magnificently restored and converted former barn, which has also retained all its charm and authenticity. Noble materials have been used with great care in the conversion of the buildings, which have lovely living rooms, belnding contemporary art and tradition. The specialist building press has written many articles about these two conversions and the chateau itself. The owners, Véronique and François, are both medical doctors and welcome guests to the holiday homes for a weekend or a week, or on a B&B basis at other times of the year.

La Vie de Cocagne

Bonnebosq , France

As in the song by Jeanne Moreau, “La Vie de Cocagne” (the life of Cockaigne) invites some of us to enjoy weekends far from Paris, in the peace and quiet of the Norman countryside. Hidden away in the midst of a huge garden, surrounded by meadows where donkeys and horses graze, this charming former farmhouse has been very tastefully renovated. The huge, open-plan living room has exposed ceiling beams and its wood-burning stove and modern décor creates a cosy atmosphere. It opens onto a dining room and a modern fitted kitchen. At the back of the house are two prettily furnished bedrooms, each with a private shower room, overlooking the garden. The third bedroom, upstairs, with its washroom, could sleep children or a third couple. The terrace has garden furniture including a dining table and sun-loungers, plus a jacuzzi: in short all you could need to relax in comfort.

Huge steel-framed windows offer lovely views of the surrounding countryside. The vast, light-filled and relaxing living room has light-hued walls, decorated with works of art. Le Pègue , France

Le Pègue is an historic village located at the heart of the Provence part of the Drôme region, not far from Valréas, Grignan and Nyons. There are traces in the village of its Gallo-Roman inhabitants in its archaeological museum, ramparts, towers, castle and chapels. A short distance from the centre of the village, on the mountain slope, Lou Pègue enjoys a stunning location. You reach this beautiful former farmhouse along a track through the lavender fields, then through a pretty pale-stone gateway into a courtyard, where you can linger and relax and where the only sound is the water gurgling into the nearby pool. An external staircase leads to the living rooms and the guest bedrooms. The Althéa and Mercure rooms are cooled by their stone-flagged floors, complemented by pale-hued furniture and soft furnishings. Each has a private bathroom.
