Case Latine

Lama, France

When Anna Baccelli decided to build her charming small hotel on this hillside, there were just boulders, olive trees and oak trees here, above the village of Lama. The hotel enjoys splendid views of the mountains and the sea. Designed to resemble a hamlet, the hotel is made up of several stone buildings in contemporary style which blend in with the surrounding countryside. Each building contains a group of three suites, with private entrances, furnished terraces and swimming pools cut out of the rock. They are spacious and have super-king-size double beds (200cm x 200cm), lounges and bathrooms with Italian-style showers or baths. They are soberly decorated, with dark-wood furniture, quarry-tiled floors and white linen curtains. Breakfast is served on a table on your terrace overlooking the mountains. For lunch and dinner, you merely have to walk down the path and some steps to the “Campu Latinu” restaurant, which offers set-menu or à la carte meals. The large glazed lounge near the reception desk is also available to guests, who can order cold drinks and browse through the books, guides and brochures about local attractions. Corte, Bastia and L’île Rousse are all nearby, and you can go hiking, canyoning or diving there. A very beautiful address for travellers seeking peace and quiet and beautiful mountains and countryside.

La Paresse en Douce

Tours sur Meymont , France

The Eastern part of the Puy de Dôme region is covered by the emerald-green Livradois Forest. If you drive along the bank of the meandering River Dore and then up a steep hill, you come to the sleepy village of Tours-sur-Meymont and you understand why this district of rolling hills is nicknamed “the Tuscany of the Auvergne”. This B&B is located on the edge of the village in a former monastery dating back to the seventeenth century. Helen and Henk have tastefully restored it, and have re-used the original doors, fittings and other features to create a lovely haven of peace and quiet where it is so easy to relax. This is reflected in the B&B’s name “La Paresse en Douce” (“Sweet Idleness”). The five spacious and very attractive bedrooms feature many original features but have a comfortable, modern atmosphere. Each bedroom have a spacious shower, large washbasin and WC. Two of them form suites with a connecting smaller bedroom. There is a delightful guests’ lounge and a library in the former chapel. Relaxation areas have been set up in several corners of the beautiful garden and there is also an outdoor hot tub with a marvellous view! There is also a small plunge pool which has been adapted for use by children. The garden is an ideal place to while away your time. In the summer, breakfast and evening meals are served outdoors on the terrace created by the delightful owners of this beautiful place.

Les Eydieux

Saint Angel , France

Marie-Claire and Cyr have created a beautiful haven of peace and quiet located between extinct volcanos and river valleys. Their B&B is situated at the end of a narrow, winding lane, so you are unlikely to come across it by chance! It offers two lovely suites, one in the former dovecote and one in the former henhouse. Both open onto private terraces and a garden and are decorated with sober elegance. They offer a perfect opportunity to relax, away from the worries of daily life. Extra luxuries include a Turkish bath and a jacuzzi in the guest bathrooms. The duvets have beautiful linen covers and the elegant lamps and ornaments are signs of Marie-Claire's delightful touch. Marie-Claire offers ayurvedic massages if you book them in advance. Guests can also take part in other themed activities, including guided foraging walks, where they can collect edible and medicinal plants and then cook them. Breakfast is served in the beautiful guests’ lounge, which has a kitchen that guests can use to prepare their own lunches or dinners. The B&B is surrounded by 12 hectares of private gardens, which are perfect for leisurely walks. Les Eydieux is the perfect place to spend a luxurious, relaxing stay, away from the rat race. It is also an excellent base for exploring the Auvergne volcanos, canoeing on the River Sioule or visiting Romanesque churches or Clermont-Ferrand.

Manoir de Hérouville

Litteau , France

A long drive bordered with hedges and meadows leads to Le Manoir d’Hérouville. It is solidly built of stone and flanked with outbuildings and a dovecote covered in climbing roses and hydrangeas. We were warmly welcomed by Catherine Doherty while her husband Michael was busy elsewhere on the estate. The Second World War is ever-present, even though we recently commemorated the70th anniversary of D-Day. The most beautiful bedroom in the B&B is named “Simonetti”, after a GI who was killed in June 1944, and whose body was only found 60 years later nearby. The room is sumptuous, with a four-poster bed, a parquet floor, exposed beams and warm-hued walls. The “Nacre” and “Bleue” rooms on the second floor in the attic are also beautiful, with pretty wooden beds and soft-hued fabrics and walls. Each has a large bathroom filled with daylight with a bath and shower. In an annexe is the “Jardin” room which is all on one level and specially designed for reduced-mobility guests. The old dovecote has been converted into a self-catering gite that can accommodate up to 4 guests. Catherine and Michael have travelled a lot in their lives and want to offer their guests what they see as the three essentials for travellers: to relax, to sleep well and to eat well. Breakfast certainly lives up to expectations with croissants, pains au chocolat, yogurt and home-made jams, plus fresh organic eggs, cheese and cooked meats and, last but not least, “hot cakes” prepared by Michael!

La Fournio

Chaussenac , France

This charming house has walls and a roof made of limestone from Xaintric in the Auvergne and enjoys pretty views of the Cantal hills. It is surrounded by a pretty garden full of luxuriant greenery. The attractive wooden front door is framed by a pink clematis. It opens onto a huge room with a fireplace, a cold larder, dining table and lounge area. A beautiful staircase leds up to the guest bedrooms named “Marronnier”, “Frêne” and “Armoise”. They are cosy and decoarted in soft hues, with antique furniture and beautiful fabrics. The “Le Journalier” suite is in a neighbouring building with its own terrace and garden. The ground floor has a traditional bread oven and is now a lounge with a sofabed. Upstairs is a bedroom with a pretty four-poster bed and a bathroom. Monsieur Charles, who will welcome you, is charming and talkative. He know this region very well and will happily tell you about its traditions, its historic buildings and the history of the village. He collects old household objects which he has used to decorate the rooms of the B&B, including a fine collection of copper pans which decorate his living room. In the evenings, he will happily prepare you Auvergne specialities in his kitchen, including his famous “truffade” and “flognardes” ! This is a B&B where guests quickly feel at home and are tempted to linger, as much for the building itself as for the tourist attractions nearby.

Un matin dans les bois

Loison sur Crequoise , France

You will find''Le Domaine du Fresnoy'' on the edge of the road that leads from the village of Loison through the fields to a small wood. It is well-hidden amid the greenery and is a delightful seventeenth-century family home built of brick and tufa stone which dates back to the era of the Knights Templar! Some of the outbuildings have been converted into three superb guest bedrooms and a family suite. Each has its own style and decor and each is named after a famous ornithologist - John Latham, Thomas Bewick, John James Audubon and Tory Petersen. The rooms are decorated in natural materials, clear colours and furniture and ornaments picked up here and there with a link to the names of the bedrooms. It goes without saying that your hosts love nature and birds. Bird guides and binoculars are available, as are lanterns for nocturnal walks in the woods. Several areas of the garden have been laid out for relaxation, including a sofa with a view, seats under a large tree, hammocks and the patio around the swimming pool. You can also cycle around the countryside, visit some local abbeys, parks and gardens or travel to the nearby coast.''Un Matin Dans Les Bois'' was one of our favourite discoveries and well worth booking a stay!

Tourrettes-sur-Loup, France

Located between Saint-Paul-de-Vence and Grasse, both close to the Mediterranean beaches and yet so far away, the “Azure Blue” B&B is hidden away in the village of Tourettes-sur-Loup, perched on a slope in the mountains inland from Nice. The owners are particularly welcoming, listen to their guests’ every request and aim to make their stays unforgettable. The tastefully decorated rooms feel spacious because they are not crowded with furniture and are equipped with every modern comfort. We were particularly impressed by the marvellous king-size beds and their lovely linen. From the private terrace there is a simply stunning view of the Baie des Anges. The heated swimming pool is available for guests from April to the end of September and is an unmissable facility to make the most of your stay in the South of France. “Azure Blue” means comfort, relaxation and gastronomy, with evening meals and breakfasts that are sure to be the highlights of your stay. Nestling in a pretty valley filled with greenery, Le Manoir du Mesnil de Bas is only 3km as the crow flies from the sea. The Rurhof Estate is located in exceptional countryside on the edge of the Hautes Fagnes Eifel National Park. The huge and beautiful farmhouse dates back to the reign of King William II of Prussia. The farm was laid out as a model Prussian farm, and today is part of a pilot scheme for sustainable development, due to the interest of its new owners in organic farming. Another building is home for around 30 horses, and the first floor above the stables has been converted for use by guests.
