Le Logis

Yvoir, Belgium

In this beautiful 30-hectare park, which has the status of a voluntary nature reserve, Alain Crespeigne has undertaken various actions to boost biodiversity, and is happy to show them to guests as part of a guided tour. The spacious house is built of local stone. On the ground floor is a vast lounge with a fireplace, a dining-room and a small TV lounge: something for everyone. The furniture and soft furnishings have been selected with good taste and refinement. Upstairs are five bedrooms with four bathrooms decorated with hand-painted tiles. The charming kitchen has wooden furniture painted white and still-life paintings on the walls. It overlooks a small courtyard as well as a scented vegetable garden.

La Charlentine

Lasne, Belgium

"La Charlentine" is hidden away off the by-roads, deep in the Walloon Brabant countryside. We are not sure if the house's name is a reference to Pliny's 'Villa Laurentine' or to the owners' two daughters, Marie-Charlotte and Valentine. The ochre-coloured house has been extended with an small guest house with a lounge, office, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom that offers much more privacy. All the rooms are delightfully decorated with antique furniture, striped wallpaper and ornaments collected by the owner's wife. Luc Dormal, the owner, is an architect, and designed the house and its extensions as well as much of the furniture, most notably in the dining room, where breakfast is served. This is a lovely spot for discovering the beautiful countryside of Walloon Brabant while remaining within easy travelling distance of Brussels.

Domaine de la Couturale

Saint-Martin, Belgium

The former home of a marble merchant (we are near Mazy), this village house is perched on an outcrop overlooking the village of St Martin. Behind the house is a huge garden on two levels with old trees, a small stone wall which supports the track of a miniature railway and a swimming pool hidden behind a beech hedge, which offers a delightful place in which families with small children can relax. The guest bedrooms are on the first floor. They are simple but comfortable and share a huge bathroom. Your hostess can prepare set-menu meals on request, using fresh produce from the orchard, kitchen garden, meadows and organic farm located nearby. Although this rural area is quite remote, it has plenty of places to visit, including Temploux and its flea market, the château at Corroy, and the black marble quarry at Mazy.

A la Fontaine-Dieu

Mehaigne, Belgium

Sonia and Jean Nizet welcome you to their pretty Hesbaye-style farmhouse set between the village of Mehaigne and the open fields and woods. They have recently converted the farm's former barn into a self-contained guesthouse, with a lounge-dining-room opening onto a terrace overlooking the garden on the ground floor, and two charming bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. The rooms have been tastefully decorated and furnished. In one of the bedrooms, the bed is on a mezzanine which is accessed via a ladder, making it unsuitable for small children or those with limited mobility. Sonia is a talented cook and loves to prepare meals using fresh local produce. Jean knows the area well and can show you the local cycle routes or some of the region's typical fortified farms.
