Le Vieux Moulin

Weywertz, Belgium

This beautiful old water-mill, on the banks of the River Warche, a stone's throw from the Hautes Fagnes National Park, has been converted into a delightfully charming small hotel. Three whitewashed-stone buildings with wooden balconies surround a pretty courtyard with a well. In the right-hand wing, guests can enjoy a beer or a glass of the local Peket liqueur in the lounge-bar. The nine guest rooms are in the other two wings of the building. They are all decorated differently, but are all very pretty and comfortable. Some have a bed up on a mezzanine, some have a small lounge area and others have a balcony overlooking the millpond which is popular with the local ducks and other birds. If there is a common decorative theme at "The Old Mill" it is the trout, which you can spot on the walls and the bed-linen. This is not just an allusion to the nearby river, but also to the father of the current owners, who purchased the building in 1967 for use as a fishing-lodge. Breakfasts and evening meals are served in the pretty dining room, in whose hearth a log fire burns all year round.

Lytshuis Zilver

Paesens-Moddergat, Netherlands

This imposing restored farmhouse is set amid the fields that run down to the Wadden seaside. The former stable has been converted into a beautiful reception area with a long pine table strewn with magazines. The visitors' book awaits your entry on an old school desk. Breakfasts made with fresh local produce are served in the room next door. The four guest bedrooms have been decorated and furnished in contrasting colours. In the "Potershok" room, pale green is mixed with orangey-yellow and there is a large bed-alcove and an antique toilet. Each room has two extra folding beds. Some of the furniture recalls the past, like the occasional tables made from old potato crates. Inside the Lauwensmeer National Park, this beautiful place is an ideal starting-point for walks, and close to Dokkum, one of the "Eleven Villages of Friseland", for cultural events.

L'Apricari

Visé, Belgium

Hidden behind a romantic garden where flowers and vegetables are harmoniously blended together, this pretty house was once the lodge to a ninteenth-century villa, built just outside the hamlet of Visé, close to the banks of the River Meuse. The guest suite is in a separate part of the building with its own entrance. It is made up of a dining room, a small lounge with a sofa-bed, a bedroom and a bathroom. The decoration throughout is carefully tasteful, as much for the choice of furniture and soft furnishings as for the colour of the walls. Breakfast is served in the dining room and is made using fresh, local, organic produce. It can also be served out in the garden in the warmer months. A delightfully calm base from which to explore the Herve region, the Dutch Limburg province or the princely city of Liège.

Het Wilgenhuis

Oostende, Belgium

This pleasant house's charming English-style garden and old garden wall protect it from noise and the gaze of passers-by. Johan Kerckhof recently took over this B&B from his mother and treats his guests like old friends. He often offers his guests coffee or an aperitif in his delightful lounge with its open fireplace, grand piano, antique furniture, piles of magazines and model ships (a family passion). Upstairs are three guest bedrooms, one of which overlooks the garden and has exposed beams, a bookshelf and a wood-burning stove. The two other bedrooms are smaller, and comfortable. All three bedrooms have private bathrooms, which have just been refurbished to offer rain-effect showers. Each bedroom has a small bookshelf with books and magazines, a television and an internet connection. Breakfast is served on the south-facing verandah or on the terace and includes a selection of breads and cheeses, as well as eggs freshly-laid in the garden!
