La Bastide des cèdres

Saint-Pantaléon-les-Vignes , France

Located in the pretty Provençal village of St Pantaléon-les-Vignes, the “La Bastide des Cèdres” B&B has a huge garden with beautiful trees (cedars, palms, limes) and various corners for relaxation. You will be very warmly welcomed by Nathalie, who offers several guest rooms in her home. On the first floor is the Yellow Room with its pretty furniture and bathroom. On the second floor is La Suite, with its lounge, that can accommodate up to four people. There is also a multimedia room where the odd extra guest can sleep. The recently renovated annexe called “Le Mazet” (“small house” in Provençal) next to the house with its private terrace overlooking the garden offers more autonomy. Breakfast is served in the beautiful dining-room-cum-kitchen or on one of the many tables in the garden. The vaulted lounge which is decorated in shades of red once formed part of an ancient aqueduct. Perhaps it is a sign that Romans once lived here? In the summer there are a series of festivals that enhance local attractions such as the ruins at Vaison-la-Romaine, the theatre at Orange and Madame de Sévigné’s chateau at Grignan.

Aux Jardins des Thévenets

Espinasse-Vozelle , France

The départements that make up the Auvergne each offer different facets of the region. For example, the Allier département has hints of Burgundy in its architecture and landscapes, including this pretty manor house, set back from the road and submerged under greenery. Lynn is happy for her garden and home to be invaded by Mother Nature, which gives them a wild and natural appearence. The interior of the building is very charming with its brick walls, its ornaments and furniture picked up here and there by the owners on their travels and Olivier’s paintings. The brightly coloured lounge is warmly welcoming, as is the dining room with its huge fireplace, where breakfasts and evening meals are served by Lynn. The smaller guest rooms are named “Nature”, “Rouge” and “Sous les toits” and the larger ones “Blanche” and “Africaine”. They are all decorated in different styles, with matching ornaments and furniture, painted walls and pretty curtains and bedcovers. “Le Pigeonnier” is a self-contained unit overlooking the courtyard garden and its odd lay-out has a lounge and kitchen on the ground floor, a bathroom on the first floor and a bedroom and lounge area on the second floor, and is idea for guests looking for more autonomy. The former orangery next to the house has given way to a beautiful indoor swimming pool whose walls are regularly decorated with works of art by local artists. A beautiful place to stay in Auvergne, near to Vichy, the Bourbonnais hills and the Saint-Pourçain vineyards.

Dar El Kobba

Tozeur, Tunisia

You will be enchanted at once by the location of Dar El Kobba, in the medina on the edge of the Tozeur palm-tree plantation. You will also be delighted by its architecture, in the best local traditional style, using sand-coloured bricks and built over several floors like a small castle. Finally you will be bowled over by the charming, warm welcome of Brigitte Henry. The Zen atmosphere envelops you as soon as you walk through the front door. Thala marble, palm timber, wrought iron and Tozeur bricks are all traditional materials used here to give the building its calm, serene ambiance. The lounge, dining room and kitchen are arranged around a central patio. The upper floors can be reached via a staircase or a lift (Dar El Kobba has been adapted for use by reduced-mobility guests). The three guest bedrooms overlook the terrace, which in turn overlooks the palm-tree plantation. They are soberly decorated in a minimalist style, in keeping with the building and your hostess’s philosophy. Breakfast and dinner are cooked by Souad, who offers dishes full of flavours which have made the B&B famous. If you fancy a change of decor and ambiance, cross the alley to the private garden with its shady, flower-filled paths. A B&B which will delight guests seeking peace, quiet and authenticity, Dar El Kobba, is a sort of oasis within an oasis.

Domaine de Grande Font

Saint-Avit-Saint-Nazaire, France

With one foot in the Dordogne and the other in the Gironde, “Le Domaine de Grande Font” could be called “Le domaine de l’excellence”. Isabelle and Stéphane moved here in 2011 and have created a “very beautiful product” from a sixeenth-century building, beautiful countryside and top-quality facilities and services. But there is more: the delightful atmosphere created by your hosts and the excellent taste with which they have decorated every corner of the house and garden, designed by Stéphane, who is a landscape gardener. La Claise

Chalais, France

The fifteenth-century manor house, farmhouse and grounds, surrounded by forest, have had new life breathed into them thanks to the passionate determination of Luc and Caroline Fontaine. Opposite the owners’ house on the other side of a large courtyard lawn, some self-contained guest accommodation, two gites and a suite, has been created in some outbuildings. The self-contained “La Claise” suite oozes charm through its round windows, each of which enjoys a unique view of the estate. The interior is very cosy with its low ceilings, it flagstone floors and its lounge with a wood-burning stove. Upstairs, a bedroom with a double bed covered with a billowy quilt is accompanied by a pretty bathroom. A spacious room 'La Sonne' is also available to guests in the farmhouse. A third room, 'Des Loubes' is just ready in the manor. Between the farmhouse and the manor house, the countryside opens up onto the river and the lake down the hill, where guests can fish, row and even swim. In the nearby woods, Caroline has set up several waymarked trails which offer opportunities for delightful nature discovery walks. The trails can also be followed on bicycles or electric (silent) scooters, available on request from Luc. Sumptuous breakfasts are served in the bread oven room. You can help yourself to delicious fresh local produce laid out of you on the large dining table, accompanied by pretty crockery and candlesticks. “Le Ris de Feu’’ is a little world created by Luc and Caroline that they would be delighted to share with you!

Le Jardin découverte

Conches-en-Ouche, France

You wouldn’t notice this townhouse in the centre of the village of Conches from the street. But when you open the gate you enter an enchanted world! You walk through a delightful country-style garden surrounded by some small, ancient buildings with half-timbered or ochre-washed walls that have been converted into a B&B, some gites, a fitness room and a meeting room. The renovation of both buildings and garden by local craftsmen is a triumph. The main building is entirely for guests with a beautiful entrance hall, a small lounge which opens onto the dining room and a kitchen where the buffet breakfasts are served. The guest bedrooms are upstairs, each named after the predominant colour of its decoration: white, orange and chestnut brown. They are very well decorated and furnished with some contemporary-style touches, but they are rather small, even though they have office areas. The suite is more spacious with its cosy wood-panelled lounge. If required, a small annexe overlooking the courtyard garden can be used to house two to four more guests in rooms on the ground and first floors. An ideal place to enjoy some peace and quiet in beautiful surroundings.

Domaine d'Aigrepont

Bressolles (Moulins), France

A few kilometres from the historic town of Moulins in the centre of France, former fief of the Bourbons, a narrow, road winds between the fields to bring you to the Domaine d'Aigrepont, perched on top of a hill. This traditional Bourbonnais-style house is full of charm and includes several seventeenth-century parts. It is surrounded by magnificent gardens and terraces and a swimming pool discreetly screened from the house. There are views from all sides of the surrounding countryside and over the many bell-towers of Moulins. The tastefully-arranged courtyard leads to the main part of the building, occupied by your hosts and a former barn, now converted into three guest bedrooms on the ground floor and a comfortable lounge. The rooms' names recall the family's history. Achille was a Kinght of St Louis who distinguished himself during the American War of Independence, Octavia, his daughter, married the Marquis de Barthelats, nicknamed "Iron Arm", who was a Royalist in the French Revolution. All three bedrooms overlook the courtyard, are spacious and comfortably furnished with family heirlooms and have delightful bathrooms. Tray meals from a local caterer are available on request. De Peperbus

Lokeren, Belgium

"De Peperbus" means "The Peppermill" and is located a stone's throw from the belfry of St Laurence's church in Lokeren. It's also synonymous with conviviality ("hartelijkheid" in Dutch), a very appropriate word for the place. Mrs Slagmulders welcomes her guests warmly to her newly-built house in the green suburb of Lokeren. The house is extended by a series of terraces and gardens, including a vegetable garden and an orchard which produces the fruit served at breakfast. The guest rooms are on the first and second floor of the house and are called "Idared", "Kelleris" and "Victoria", varieties of apple, cherry and plum. The rooms are decorated in an elegantly simple style with top-quality bed linen. Each bedroom has every modern comfort: television, WiFi internet access, books and magazines, flowers, Illy coffee maker and a minibar stocked with wine, beer and champagne. All you need for an enjoyable stay. Although your hostess does not serve evening meals, she will be pleased to recommend local restaurants, some of which serve eels, the local speciality.

Les Jardins du Val

Port-Villez (Giverny), France

Set back from the road which runs along the bank of the River Seine, opposite Giverny, this charming valley used to be lined with water-mills. Today several pretty houses are hidden away in the vegetation here, including "Les Jardins du Val". Stéphane Cailloux's family have lived here for several generations, and he has recently renovated this group of stone buildings to offer five delightful guest rooms. His choice of lighter hues gives them a luminous, soft atmosphere. Their furnishings and fittings have been carefully chosen, as have those of the comfortable bathrooms. The breakfast room, which overlooks the garden, has lemon-yellow walls making it particularly pretty and bright. The garden runs down to the river and is planted with many rare scented plants. Mr Cailloux is a garden designer and has taken particular care in the design of his own garden, and is happy to talk passionately about it with his guests. In addition to the Claude Monet museum and gardens nearby, there are also many chateaux, museums and gardens in the area, and Paris is just 45 minutes away.
