Maison Grandchamp

Treignac, France

On the border between the Auvergne and the Périgord regions, the pretty village of Treignac overlooks the River Vézère. The village is surrounded by lovely countryside with forests, lakes and villages, ideal for walking and fishing. Marielle and François will happily take you on a mushroom-gathering expedition there too. The region's superb heritage buildings are also well worth a visit. The "Grandchamp House" has belonged to Marielle's family since the seventeenth century. Its thick stone walls, huge open fireplaces, antique furniture and the many souvenirs picked up on travels around the world create a delightful atmosphere inside. Upstairs, the three guest rooms are all decorated and furnished in different styles: Louis XV, Empire and Troubadour. They are all charming with lively or muted colour schemes and selected furniture. Breakfasts and evening meals are served in the kitchen-dining room near the hearth in the winter, or out on the terrace in the summer. At breakfast, guests can enjoy brioches, buckwheat pancakes, clafoutis, cakes and croissants made by your hostess. She will also happily prepare regional or gastronomic evening meals on request. From the hilltop terrace and garden, guests can enjoy lovely views over the roofs of Treignac.

Amphore du Berry

Saint-Amand-Montrond, France

The Berry Amphora Trail brings together ten B&Bs with links to the region's Gallo-Roman history. The trail is also a cultural one, as each B&B continues the region's arts & crafts heritage, through exhibitions of the work of local artists. The trail starts at Sylvie Laire's "Amphore du Berry" in the charming village of Saint-Armand-Montron. The front facade of the building is in sober nineteenth-century style. To the rear is a pretty courtyard and a lovely indoor swimming pool with an atrium decorated with Moorish frescos. At the bottom of the garden is an annexe that can be used for meetings or receptions. Upstairs are five beautiful guest rooms and suites, evocatively named after famous local people: Isabel Godin, Alain-Fournier, Georges Sand, Berry and Bourbonnais. The guest rooms are luxurious and spacious with themed decorations, each with a beautiful en-suite bathroom, one of which has a jacuzzi. Breakfast is served on the terrace, between the swimming pool and the garden, or in the guests' dining room. From here you can follow the Amphora Trail, the Jacques Cœur Trail or any other trail you like...

Mas d'Oléandre

Montaren et Saint Mediers, France

"Le Mas d'Oléandre" is an peaceful oasis located in a delightful hamlet near Uzès. Léonard and Esther Robberts decided to open a B&B because they enjoy meeting guests from a wide variety of backgrounds. You can feel the warm and friendly atmosphere as soon as you open the discreet front-door of this enchanting place. The beautiful house reflects the owners’ attention to detail, their quest for harmony and their practical common sense. Everything has been designed to ensure a top-quality stay, with preference given to couples without young children, so as to preserve the restorative peace and quiet of the place. Each apartment or mini-gite has a double bedroom, a bathroom, a lounge, a kitchen and a private terrace overlooking the walled garden. One of the gites is considerably bigger than the others and has an upper floor. A guest bedroom is also available, in addition to the apartments. The gites and guest room are tastefully decorated: the traditional lime-based paint on the walls adds to their local charm. The garden is divided into two parts, the walled upper garden and terraces and the lower garden containing the swimming pool which is open to the surrounding countryside. In the evenings, Esther can concoct set-menu meals for you using home-grown produce served on a prettily laid table on the terrace or in the garden.

Château de Manoncourt

Manoncourt-sur-Seille, France

Somewhere between a château and a villa, this house is certainly unusual. Rebuilt in 1919 on the site of an eighteenth-century château whose towers, stables and dovecote have survived, its design was influenced by Art Nouveau, as was the large mural painted around the same time in the reception room by Louis Guignot, an artist of the Nancy school. Guests can admire the mural as they take breakfast, or during one of the frequent art exhibitions held there, or during a reception, business meeting or other event. The two "Ylang" guest rooms in the former stables are completely different. Virginie Kuntz demonstrates her passion for Asia in their Zen, minimalist atmosphere and in the furniture and ornaments picked up in her travels with her husband. This young couple who took over the property ten years ago add a delightful cottage in one of the pavilions of the entry: "Le Pavillon Rouge!". Guests can enjoy rare scents during a walk in the garden, along with unussual structures and objects which transport you to another universe.

Les Chaufourniers

Crouay, France

Florence and Dominique are professional hoteliers who left the Ile d'Yeu off the Atlantic coast of France to embark on the adventure of creating their own guest house in the depths of the Norman countryside. The decoration of the four beautiful guest rooms was inspired by their travels in Asia and South America, and each room has a different feel with furniture and photos by your hosts on the walls chosen to go together. The names of the rooms are evocative of travel and dreams: Amarapura, Antigua, Angkor and Mandalay. Each guest room has its own pretty en-suite bathroom with a mosaic or coloured-tile floor. Guests can use a cosy lounge on the ground floor with an open fireplace, television and reading corner. The next room is the pretty dining room, where breakfast is served on a large table. On request, Florence will don her apron in the evening and rustle up delicious Norman dinners using fresh local produce.

A la Chaumière

Verton, France

"The Thatched Cottage" is an apt name for this building with its whitewashed walls, its thatched roof and its huge hydrangea bushes in the garden. It is hidden away in the hamlet of Verton, a few kilometres from Berck-Plage, Le Touquet and the Somme estuary. Mrs Terrien has enthusiastically run her B&B from 1989, and will welcome you warmly. Each guest room is decorated and furnished in a distinctive style: the "Yellow" room is vaguely rustic, whereas the "Amarante" room is more romantic. The "Dovecot" room is on two levels and the "Black & White" room is more modern and is to be found in another part of the house, reached via an outdoor staircase. The dining room is decorated in high Art Deco style, and if you stay for eight days you will be served breakfast on a different set of china each day. We hear that sometimes "short breakfast chats" with Mrs Terrien can run on until noon ! A really charming B&B, well-situated within reach of many tourist attractions.

Le Marronnier

Beausaint, Belgium

You can still see the old chestnut tree ("le marronnier") growing out of the local stone wall that surrounds this sixteenth-century farmhouse on the edge of the little village of Beausaint, near La Roche-en-Ardenne. The four beautiful rustic guest rooms in a separate building are each named after a famous artist. "Van Gogh" for the red room, "Klimt" for the blue room, "Gauguin" for the yellow room and "Monet" for the green room. The rooms are delightfully decorated and furnished, and their bathrooms are equipped with lots of beautifully-presented little extras: soap, shampoo, comb, shower-cap, hair-dryer etc. Every morning, Mrs Leroy prepares a splendid Ardenne buffet breakfast in the dining room, to get you off on the right foot for a day's hiking.
