Les Mazures

Beaumetz, France

This B&B is a contemporary take on the traditional Normandy longhouse, clad in timber and surrounded by a lush garden full of flowers. It has received “Green Key” certification for compliance with environmentally-friendly criteria. The three guest bedrooms are small but have been decorated and furnished with care and all open onto the garden. Each has a small office area and an ensuite bathroom. Peter will welcome you and ensure you have everything you need for your wellbeing, whereas Vincent is the cook who prepares delicious evening meals from his French and English repertoire using fresh local produce. We were delighted during our visit by the delicious smell of freshly baked bread and cakes. This is an ideal base for cyclists and hikers, located close to the Bays of the Somme and Authie, with their abundant flora and fauna. Lovers of history will enjoy visiting St Riquier Abbey, Amiens Cathedral and the gardens at Valloires. A delightful address that also represents excellent value for money.

Le Mas en Provence

Entrechaux, France

The “Provençal Farmhouse” B&B is an accurate name, surrounded as it is by hills and vineyards, in the Vaucluse region, a stone’s throw from Vaison-la-Romaine, in a district famous for its landscapes and architecture, with no less than 19 listed traditional villages. Mont Ventoux, les Dentelles de Montmirail and the Toulourenc valley are perfect for hiking and walking, cycling or horse-riding. In the summer, music, theatre and opera festivals are held at Vaison-la-Romaine, Orange and Avignon. The B&B has a delightful, welcoming courtyard with a fountain and lemon tree. A curving external staircase leads to the four guest bedrooms, named after flowers: ‘’While Lily” and ‘’Linseed Flower” in white hues, ‘’Iris’’ and ‘’Lavender’’ in shades of mauve. The paint, furniture and fabrics have been chosen with care. While Sophie does not offer hot meals, she can prepare cold tray meals, made using local produce, on request. Guests have access to the lounge-cum-dining room, where they can prepare their own snacks or enjoy a glass of wine. The swimming pool in the garden is difficult to resist on a sunny day and you can enjoy a revitalising or relaxing massage under the bamboo shelter, next to a former wash house. The keywords for this B&B are charm, softness and sensual pleasure.

La Monèze Basse

Limoux , France

‘’La Monèze Base’’ is a B&B in a former vineyard that is still surrounded by working vineyards. Located between the fields and hills south of Carcassone, it is an ideal base from which to explore the Pyrenees on one side and Cathar country on the other, with its castles, abbeys and villages. Jérémy, your host, first visited this region as a child and moved here with his wife Tania to set up and run this B&B. The guest bedrooms are named after local peaks climbed by your hosts, who are keen hikers: ‘’Madres’’, ‘’Canigou’’, ‘’Soularac’’ and ‘’Bugarach’’. The guest bedrooms are prettily furnished with brightly coloured fabrics and paintings. Jérémy can provide maps and guidebooks for the region, or he can devise day itineraries for you. Although evening meals are not served every day, there are themed evenings each summer (French, Spanish, Belgian, etc.) depending on the owners’ fancy or the guests staying with them. A fun atmosphere is guaranteed! Jérémy’s previous experience in the hotel business shows in the attentive and warm welcome offered to guests, and Tania is a local doctor.

Le Valangré

Chaumont-Gistoux, Belgium

The house overlooks the rooftops and church of the village of Gistoux. It is a former farmhouse built of local stone and has been comprehensively restored and converted into a pleasant B&B with five guest rooms. While all are prettily decorated and furnished, they each have a personal touch: an old lawyer’s bookcase in the ‘’Cheval Blanc’’ room, a vaulted ceiling of rounded salvaged-brick arches in the ‘’Arcade’’ room and a high ceiling from which is suspended a timber cabin containing a bathroom in the ‘’Cabane’’ room. Guests have access to the large lounge on the ground floor with its vaulted ceiling. Breakfast is served there, next to the fire on cooler mornings or on the terrace in finer weather. All the food is home-made and organic, including freshly-squeezed orange and apple juice, eggs from the hens in the garden, bread and jam. Guests can also put their feet up in the peaceful garden or enjoy one of Jean-Luc’s many walks around the local meadows and woods. The Brabant Ardennes region is a walker’s paradise with its shallow valleys dotted with picturesque villages, beautiful fortified farmhouses, castles and chapels.

Les Chemins de Traversaz

Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, France

“Les Chemins de Traversaz” is situated high in the mountains, on the south side of the Maurienne valley in Savoie. Nestling at the heart of the hamlet of Traversaz, this solid stone building rubs shoulders with a small, listed, newly-restored, Baroque church. In just a few years, Anne and Alain have turned a ruined house into a superb, charming B&B. They have used stone, timber and metal in the restoration and have restored its character and added contemporary touches, such as the open fireplace, the staircases and the designer furniture. Under the beautiful vaulted timber ceiling is a large living-cum-dining room and a kitchen whose huge windows look out onto the mountains. Breakfasts and evening meals are served on the large, convivial dining table. Alain creates his meals using the best fresh local produce: bread, cheese, meat, fruits, wine and herbs… And the vegetables all come from his garden. On the lower floor are the three carefully designed guest bedrooms and the family suite, named ‘’Tintin’, ‘’Tchang’’ and ‘’Milou Mi-ange’. They have prettily painted walls, beautiful shower rooms and comfortable linen sheets. Guests have access to the relaxation area with its infra-red sauna and massage table, which would be particularly welcome after a day’s hiking in the mountains, as well as a terrace and pétanque court. There are lots of brochures and books of all sorts - art books, guides, stories, magazines and maps – which can be used to choose your itinerary for walks in both summer and winter, or to discover chapels, abbeys, museums, forts and other historic buildings nearby.

Les Chambres d’hôtes de Magali

Montegrosso, France

The B&B Magali is located at the end of an alley in Cassano, a hilltop village at the foot of the Montegrosso. You can follow one of the many mule trails that lead from village to village from Calvi to L’île Rousse. If you take a guided tour, in each village you can hear the organs being played in their well-preserved Baroque churches. The region becomes very musical in the summer, with many concerts and festivals in local towns and villages, from rock to jazz, Baroque, folk and Classical. The tall B&B owned by Magali and Etienne offers five guest rooms which are not very large but very prettily decorated, with Art Deco ornaments and furniture and stencilled freizes. The bathrooms are cool with their white ceramic tiles, pretty wahbasins and 1930s accessories. Breakfast is served at large tables in the lounge or on the terrace in glass tableware by La Rochère, and includes bread, biscuits, yogurt and home-made, organic jams. Except for in July and August, Magali offers set-menu evening meals including creative dishes made with Corsican produce. This unpretentious, warmly-welcoming B&B is very reasonably priced and would make an ideal base from which to explore this region full of natural and cultural riches.

La Ferme du Pré Carré

Villard, France

At the heart of the “Vallée Verte” in the Haute-Savoie, a 30-minute drive from Geneva, Sandrine and Gilles welcome you to their B&B in a seventeenth-century Savoyard farmhouse that has been comprehensively renovated, la ferme du Pré carré. The B&B has five guest bedrooms that have been decorated with care in traditional Alpine style using stone and timber. La Forestière

Le Hohwald, France

Located in a mountain village, surrounded by forest and meadows,''La Forestièr'' is well-named. It is at the end of a small private road off the main road and enjoys superb views over the surrounding countryside. It was built a few years ago in contemporary style in stone and wood. Inside, in the lounge, dining room and other rooms,''nobl'' materials such as slate floors, lime-washed walls and solid oak doors are complemented by designer furniture. The five guest rooms and suites upstairs have a very ''cocoonin'' atmosphere, enhanced by their parquet floors, their pale-hued walls and a range of traditional local objects and furniture The pretty embroidered bed and household linen is particularly lovely. On some evenings, Catherine and Eric offer evening meals featuring regional specialities that make the most of the excellent local produce, including game (one of Eric’s specialities) as well as other more unusual dishes, such as fig tarte Tatin, wild-boar ham or pumpkin gratin with gingerbread… And to help digest all that, there are plenty of lovely local walks through the forest waymarked by the Club Vosgien. The garden has various well-placed corners for reading or relaxation, separated by shrubs or rose beds. Each of the 5 guest bedrooms has its own style. The “Orientale” and “Sarrazine” rooms are spacious with lounge areas, small terraces and small second bedroom on a mezzanine. The “Cocagne”, “Pyrène” and “Compostelle” rooms, in the attic are smaller but very cosy. La maison du Guil

Eygliers, France

The hamlet of La Font d'Eygliers enjoys superb views of the mountains. Tom and Wim welcome their guests to their B&B in a sixteenth-century former priory, which looks like a mountain chalet. After the priors moved out, the building was used to store wine and was then completely renovated by its previous owners. The heavy work having already been done, the new owners just had to add their own finishing touches. The overall colour scheme is quite sober, with a few splashes of colour and designer ornaments. The entrance hall leads to the heart of the house, a beautiful room with a vaulted ceiling that is now used as a lounge and dining room for guests. A passageway through the thick walls leads to the sauna. Another leads to the stone staircase up to the “Pimprenelle” room, with its beautiful pebble shower. The vaulted “Armoise” room is on the same level as a small garden. The “Marjolaine” and “Epilobe” rooms are accessed from the living room and each has lovely views of the mountain. On some evenings, your hosts, who love cooking, will prepare light dinners which are served in the vaulted dining room or in the garden next to the house. An address recommended for guests who enjoy both summer and winter walks.
