La maison du Guil

Eygliers, France

The hamlet of La Font d'Eygliers enjoys superb views of the mountains. Tom and Wim welcome their guests to their B&B in a sixteenth-century former priory, which looks like a mountain chalet. After the priors moved out, the building was used to store wine and was then completely renovated by its previous owners. The heavy work having already been done, the new owners just had to add their own finishing touches. The overall colour scheme is quite sober, with a few splashes of colour and designer ornaments. The entrance hall leads to the heart of the house, a beautiful room with a vaulted ceiling that is now used as a lounge and dining room for guests. A passageway through the thick walls leads to the sauna. Another leads to the stone staircase up to the “Pimprenelle” room, with its beautiful pebble shower. The vaulted “Armoise” room is on the same level as a small garden. The “Marjolaine” and “Epilobe” rooms are accessed from the living room and each has lovely views of the mountain. On some evenings, your hosts, who love cooking, will prepare light dinners which are served in the vaulted dining room or in the garden next to the house. An address recommended for guests who enjoy both summer and winter walks.

Pipangaille

Andancette, France

Only recently opened by Marie-Claire and Bruno, this B&B has plenty of advantages that will ensure it will be around for a long time. First we should explain its odd name. “Pipangaille” is the name given by the inhabitants of La Réunion island in the Indian Ocean to the loofah, a tropical vine-like plant which produces fruit which look like large courgettes and which are dried to produce the loofahs used in the bath or shower. Marie-Claire and Bruno lived on La Réunion for many years, before buying this 3,500m² plot of land with trees and flowers and a beautiful three-storey house which now offers four guest rooms, each named after a country visited by the owners. Breakfast includes frehly-baked bread, butter, home-made jams, cheese, seasonal fruits and local specialities such as “pogne” and “St-Genix”. It is guaranteed to set you up well for the day ahead. After a day spent enjoying the many cultural, gastronomic or sporting attractions nearby, guests can relax in and around the swimming pool. The smiles of your hosts and their warm welcome will ensure that you return for further stays!

La Chaumière de Sucy

Sucy-en-Brie, France

‘’La Chaumière de Sucy’’ (“The Thatched Cottage in Sucy”)is well named as it has a large thatched roof which envelops a 1960s villa. The house is surrounded by a large garden with a long pond bordered by a pretty covered walk and a relaxation area. Amusing sculptures made from scrap metal have been set up in the garden and the house. The house is entirely given over to the B&B guests, with a large living room with a huge fireplace and a piano. The dining room next door has walls painted in warm hues of red and exposed wooden ceiling beams. A generous breakfast buffet is set up there each morning which includes ham, local artisan cheeses, yoghurt, a selection of breads and pastries, fruit juice and fresh fruit salad. There is a charmingly colourful flowery fresco in the stairwell leading up to the bedrooms, which is a sign of things to come upstairs, where your host has chosen the colours for each bedroom with the aid of a colour chart (green, blue, pink, red, grey and black). The furniture is in various styles: 1930s burr walnut in the ‘’Music Hall’’room; black, silver and red designer pieces in the ‘’Rive gauche’’room; romantic style in the “Le rêve de Géraldine’’ room, and softer tones for the two second-floor rooms. Robert Glaive took his time doing this conversion, using all his experience of running hotels and restaurants.

The rooms are called “Blonde”, “Charolais” and “Limousin”. They are not very spacious but they are sophisticated. Breakfast is served on a large table in the dining room and includes fresh local produce: local cheese and cooked meats,home-made jams, freshly-squeezed fruit juice, yogurt, eggs, chocolate, a selection of breads - enough to satisfy guests of all ages! La Buissonnière

Aywaille, Belgium

This charming B&B located at the heart of the village of Xhoris is an ideal venue for a cocooning weekend. With its stone walls, its schist-stone doorways and its beautiful black marble floors, the house looks very classy. The welcome to guests is warm too. Despite the bedrooms upstairs not being very large, they are very nicely decorated. Each has a small lounge area and a pretty bathroom. "Wild Rose" is more romantic with roses painted on the wall. "Wistaria" is more musical with its walls papered with sheet music. At the bottom of the garden is the "Nastertium" suite which is spacious enough to accommodate a small family. This modern house is built of timber and brick in a vaguely American style. It stands near a busy road just outside Bruges, but is protected from the traffic noise by double-glazed windows. Domaine de Montizeau

Lailly en Val, France

In Solonge, nature is omnipresent in a series of forests and lakes, often privately-owned, that are highly-prized by hunters, especially hunters with hounds. Le Domaine de Montizeau is an old hunting lodge whose stables have been converted into a B&B, offering four beautiful guest rooms on the ground and first floors. They are all very comfortable and are differently decorated according to various themes, for example the "La Meute" room is amusingly decorated with family portraits where the heads have been replaced by the heads of hunting hounds. In another part of the building, guests take breakfast in the lounge-cum-dining-room-cum-kitchen and evening meals can also be served there on request. The large garden is furnished with chaises longues and steamer chairs and is a great place to relax. A lovely place to stay if you'd like to go walking or to visit the Châteaux of the Loire or the many other parks and gardens in the region.

B&B Landseinde

Sint-Margriete, Belgium

At the Northernmost point of the East Flanders province of Belgium, where it borders the Dutch province of Zeeland, the "Land's End" B&B certainly deserves its name! In this little-known region, the natural flora and fauna are largely untouched and unique. Hares, partridges and other rare birds are common here. The farm has a vigilant guard dog who keeps an eye on the geese, chickens and ponies. Your hostess has very green fingers and can usually be found tending her herb garden, which she loves to show to her guests. The old barn has been converted into four beautiful guest rooms, which are spacious, each with a small lounge area and soberly decorated in shades of beige and grey. On the same level as the garden, each has a private terrace overlooking the surrouding countryside. The generous breakfasts, including home-grown produce are served in the pretty dining room or on your private terrace. Your hosts really understand the meaning of the word "hospitality" and do all they can to make their guests as comfortable as possible. An address particularly suitable for nature-lovers, bird-watchers and gourmets as there are many Michelin-starred restaurants nearby.
