In the large entrance hall is a huge wooden table that can seat 24 people, where breakfast and evening meals are served, opposite the open fire burning in the hearth in a monumental fireplace. The table is prettily laid and welcoming, with its coloured tableware, candlesticks and prettily presented food. Claudine and Pierre obviously enjoy welcoming, spoiling and surprising their guests. Despite their other jobs, they are always available to help their guests with an elegant smile. Upstairs are the four beautiful guest rooms, which offer every comfort for your wellbeing. The furniture, fabrics and bedlinen have been selected with care, and the bathooms are attractive, with twin jacuzzis in two of them and twin hydrojet showers in the other two, which will tempt you to linger there. La Font Vineuse

Saint-Pierre d’Argençon, France

Water plays a key part in the history of this beautiful nineteenth-century villa built over the Font Vineuse spring, famed since ancient times for its mineral water rich in magnesium that aids the digestion. The building was based on a spa hotel and was used for bottling the mineral water and for mineral water treatments for over a century. Gérard, who took over the property and its surrounding park, which features several beautiful sequoias and cedars, has comprehensively remodelled the house to convert it into a B&B on the theme of water and wellbeing. The large, bottle-shaped swimming pool overlooks the garden below through large windows. Higher up is the original fountain where guests can drink the mineral water in a huge room hung with old photos which recall the building’s history, next to the snooker room, massage room and B&B. Upstairs are the huge, sumptuous guest suites, each with a jacuzzi, bathroom and office area. Some also have terraces. They have all been restored to offer delightful décor and every modern comfort. In the evenings, set-menu meals are served in the large lounge-cum-dining room, with its bar and wood-burning stove, which is linked to the very modern kitchen. This B&B offers guaranteed peace and quiet and a chance to relax and recharge your batteries in the mountainous Haute Provence region, with many opportunities for hiking, rafting and parascending in summer and ski-ing and snowshoeing in winter.
