La Villa Cécile

Vouhé (La Rochelle), France

While the exterior of Villa Cécile looks a lot like many other local houses, the interior is most certainly unique and reflects the tastes of Gérard and Cécile, your hosts. They had the house built to their own specification, with a particular emphasis on being environmentally-friendly. The surprises start as soon as you go through the front door into a curving corridor with a band of vivid colour, which leads to the lounge and dining room. The many works of contemporary art on the walls and the contemporary-style furniture continue to surprise you. The three guest bedrooms are very trendy in style and are named after bed sizes! So the "King-Size" suite on the ground floor has a king-size bed (2m), an en-suite bathroom and a terrace overlooking the garden. The "Queen-Size" room upstairs has a queen-size bed (1m80) and is decorated in shades of green and grey, whereas the "Circle-Size" room has a 2.1m-diameter round bed and red decor. The furniture and decorations have been carefully selected to create different atmospheres in each bedroom. The bathrooms are equally tasteful. Breakfast is served on a large table in the dining room, whose linen varies depending on how Cécile is feeling each day. If you feel like relaxing, then there is a jacuzzi and a Finnish-style sauna available for your use in the garden.

La Verdière

Lille (Sainghin en Melantois), France

"The Greenery" (La verdière) is a well-deserved name for this haven of peace and greenery a few kilometres from Lille! Luc and Caroline Delasalle have restored this beautiful family house and have given it a new lease of life by converting part of it into a B&B. The house is surrounded by a large garden containing many ancient trees, which has also been restored and updated to include a pond which reflects the house, beds of flowers and vegetables, terraces on which to relax and a flock of pigeons who fly around the garden. Originally built in the 1920s, the house has been restored with great good taste and guests have access to most of it. The large lounges and dining rooms on the ground floor are perfect for family reunions, meetings for sporting events or even business meetings. Upstairs are three beautiful guest bedrooms and two suites (with small lounges and sofa-beds) named after the trees in the garden: Oak, Plane, Beech, Charm and Cedar. They have been decorated with great good taste in shades of grey on the walls, curtains and bed-linen, plus pretty bedspreads and antique furniture. Each has an en-suite bathroom with bath & shower. Guests have access to the relaxation area in the basement with jacuzzi, Turkish bath and sauna. Massages can be provided on request. In the evening, Caroline will happily cook you a delicious meal using home-grown vegetables and seasonal produce, combined in her own personal way.

On the first floor of the entrance block are three beautiful large guest bedrooms with private bathrooms. In another wing of the building, with its own entrance, is a pretty meeting room that can hold up to 45 people for family celebrations, weddings, etc. Meals and other food can be prepared in the professional kitchen just below the meeting room. Breakfast is served in the former nuns' kitchen, now the dining room. In the next room, guests can enjoy a massage with essential oils. Fields of Gold

Beselare, Belgium

Nathalie Vandenbussche named her guest house after Sting's song "Fields of Gold" which changed her life! The song inspired her to leave her family's horticulture business and to set up her B&B and well-being centre. One wing of this charming family house, which has been reconstructed using stone and bricks from a old city house, houses two sober, but pretty and relaxing guest rooms, each with its own bathroom and private entrance. The windows of both rooms look out onto fields as far as the eye can see. On the ground floor is the guests' lounge-dining-room where you can relax by the fireside or enjoy your organic breakfast. You can also book a massage or an aromatherapy session with Nathalie. An excellent spot for a relaxing weekend in this little-known corner of Belgium known as the Heuvelland, not far from Ypres and the French border.

Hôtel des Bains

Robertville, Belgium

The Hotel des Bains has plenty of trump-cards up its sleeve, not least its perfect situation on the edge of the Hautes Fagnes plateau next to the Robertville lake. This long-established and well-known hotel has been taken over by a young couple who have worked in the hotel and tourism industries elsewhere. Full of enthusiasm and expert knowledge, Elizabeth and Jean-Pierre Robert-Rey have transformed this old Ardennes house into a charming small hotel and well-being centre. Most of the rooms overlook the lake, some have balconies and lounge area, and all are very comfortable. The large dining room has an open fireplace and opens through into the lounge and bar. It overlooks the lake and the garden. The chef's cooking is simple, light and exquisite. Other opportunities for relaxation abound: sauna, Turkish bath, infinity jacuzzi, indoor swimming-pool, wooden terrace, garden and lake. Nearby are Reinhardstein, the Fagnes, Eupen, Malmédy and Montjoie, which are well worth a visit.

B&B Oase

Londerzeel, Belgium

"The Oasis B&B" is indeed an oasis of freshness in the heart of Flemish Brabant, in the Brussels-Mechelen-Antwerp triangle. The predominant theme here is water - for drinking, for washing or for filling a water bed mattress or a jacuzzi for relaxing in after a visit to the sauna. The names of the guest rooms, "H" and "W" upstairs and "O" downstairs continue the theme. All the rooms have been decorated and furnished with care by Kris and Nancy to provide every comfort for guests. The ground-floor room has an en-suite sauna, and shares a jacuzzi with the other guest room. Both rooms can be rented together as "H2O", enabling guests to use all the facilities. Kris and Nancy also offer a range of well-being including relaxing massages, which, combined with delightful walking, cycling or horse-riding opportunities in the surrounding countryside, make this an ideal destination for a relaxing long weekend.

Manoir Ormille

Bomal-sur-Ourthe, Belgium

This huge building dating from 1900 was formerly a well-known hotel in this tourist region around the charming small town of Durbuy. Today the B&B is run by Vanessa, who trained in tourism and catering, and is living her dream as the owner of "L'Ormille"! The house is surrounded by a large garden, with charming arcades, rosebeds and a small summer-house, where a small well-being centre has been built with sauna, jacuzzi, Turkish bath and massages available on request. The two joined lounges on the ground floor are open to guests. A generous buffet breakfast is served in the dining room or on the verandah. Upstairs, the three comfortable guest rooms and two guest suites are all decorated in different styles and each has a private bathroom. To tell them apart, they have each been named after a local town: Durbuy, Pallenge, Wéris, Barvaux and Laroche. A welcoming place to stay in a region with many tourist attractions and activities.

Domaine de la Carrauterie

Sautin, Belgium

The Domaine de la Carreauterie is a former terracotta-tile factory located in the "boot" of the province of Hainaut, on the edge of Rance forest. Now a charming, creeper-covered villa, the building offers four guest bedrooms with en-suite facilities decorated and furnished according to their names: "Oriental Sun", "Mountain Dream", "Victoria" and "Spring Flowers". Françoise Godart has carefully chosen the furniture, fabrics and ornaments that decorate each bedroom to give them their own unique ambiances. Guests can also choose the tree-house, the Bali pavilion or the gypsy caravan, which are certainly unusual! For a cosier option, choose one of the two new loft apartments "Caraïbes" and "Safari" each with a jacuzzi, sauna and shower, that have been created in the old "Côté Est" house. Mrs Godart has deliberately chosen to offer well-being treatments to her guests and has created several delightful treatment spaces around the covered swimming pool, including a Nordic chalet with sauna and outdoor whirlpool bath and jacuzzi, plus relaxing Mongolia yurt! Massages are given in each of these spaces, as well as in the "African Colours" and "East Coast" treatment rooms, either as part of a treatment package, or on an à la carte basis. A welcoming, surprising address, aimed at travel and well-being.
